As the 2026 NFL offseason kicks into gear, the Carolina Panthers find themselves at a pivotal juncture. Fresh off their first playoff appearance since 2017, the Panthers, led by GM Dan Morgan, are poised to make strategic moves that could elevate their roster to new heights. The upcoming free agency period is crucial, and addressing specific roster gaps is essential for the Panthers to continue their upward trajectory.
The most pressing need? Improving the pass rush.
Last season, the Panthers found themselves at the bottom of the league in quarterback pressure rate, a mere 26.2%. They also tied for third-fewest sacks, managing just 30.
Over the last three seasons, their average of 1.75 sacks per game ranks worst in the NFL. The absence of a double-digit sack player since 2022, following the trade of Brian Burns to the Giants in 2024, underscores the urgency.
In 2025, no pass rusher exceeded five sacks, with Derrick Brown and rookie Nic Scourton each reaching that mark.
The defensive line issues have been a concern since Burns' departure. Yet, instead of addressing this in the 2025 NFL Draft's first round, Morgan chose wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan with the eighth pick. That decision paid off, as McMillan delivered a standout rookie season with 1,014 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, earning the 2025 AP Rookie of the Year honors.
Morgan didn’t neglect the defense entirely, though. On the draft's second day, he picked up Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. Scourton showed promise with 40 tackles, 23 quarterback hurries, and five sacks, while Umanmielen faced some rookie challenges.
Despite Derrick Brown’s solid performance and Scourton’s emergence, bolstering the defensive front remains a priority. Free agents like Dre'Mont Jones and Boye Mafe, both coming off strong 2025 seasons, could provide the veteran presence Scourton needs to thrive. Alternatively, the Panthers might opt to use their draft picks to secure a fresh pass-rushing talent.
As the Panthers navigate free agency and the draft, their decisions in enhancing the pass rush will be pivotal. With the right moves, they can solidify their defense and set the stage for another playoff run in 2026.
