Carolina Panthers Eye Key Additions as Free Agency Continues
Charlotte, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers are making moves and shaking things up at Bank of America Stadium. The team welcomed Jaelan Phillips, Devin Lloyd, Kenny Pickett, and Luke Fortner as they inked their contracts on Thursday. Stone Forsythe and John Metchie are expected to follow suit soon.
While the initial frenzy of free agency has settled, Panthers’ GM Dan Morgan is still on the hunt to strengthen the roster. There’s talk of adding a tackle, a safety, and perhaps a nickel cornerback, potentially someone with a versatile skill set. And with no punter on the roster yet, Morgan might play it cool and wait until after the draft, a strategy he successfully used with kicker Ryan Fitzgerald last year.
The tackle situation is particularly intriguing. Forsythe, who allowed 11 sacks in 13 games last season, finds himself at the bottom of Pro Football Focus’s rankings for pass protection. His one-year, $2 million contract suggests he’s more of a depth option rather than a Week 1 starter, especially with Ikem Ekwonu on the mend from knee surgery.
The Panthers had hoped to bring back Yosh Nijman, but his unexpected retirement threw a wrench in those plans. Now, Morgan has some flexibility with the budget initially set aside for Nijman, possibly targeting another swing tackle, exploring draft options, or even both.
Panthers offensive line coach Joe Gilbert was spotted at Clemson’s pro day, leading drills for Blake Miller, a promising first-round tackle prospect. Though the Panthers have never drafted a Clemson player, Miller or another tackle could be a smart move with the 19th pick.
As the Panthers evaluate their options, here are five free agents who could fit the bill:
OT Jamaree Salyer
Formerly with the Los Angeles Chargers, Salyer ranks 95th in The Athletic’s top 150. Known for his versatility, having played both guard and tackle, Salyer could be a valuable asset if the Panthers choose not to re-sign Brady Christensen.
OT Cam Robinson
Robinson, who spent last season with the Cleveland Browns, is a seasoned pro with 114 career starts. However, his performance last season was only slightly better than Forsythe’s, so any deal would need to be team-friendly.
S Andre Cisco
Cisco, previously with the New York Jets, is an intriguing option with his ball-hawking skills, boasting seven interceptions over two seasons. Despite missing part of last season due to injury, he could be a worthwhile gamble, especially with his youth and speed.
S Nick Scott
A familiar face, Scott tested the market but remains unsigned. With a career-high 111 tackles last year, he’s respected in the locker room and could fit well as a third safety, especially in schemes that utilize a big nickel or dime ‘backer.
CB Roger McCreary
McCreary, who played for the Los Angeles Rams, is a physical presence in the secondary. Despite an injury setback last season, his willingness to tackle and defensive versatility make him a strong candidate for the Panthers’ needs.
As the Panthers navigate these decisions, they’re clearly focused on building a robust and dynamic roster for the upcoming season. Fans should keep an eye on these potential additions, as they could play pivotal roles in Carolina’s quest for success.
