Carolina Panthers Eye Explosive Addition Following Major Defensive Signings

Could Makai Lemon be the game-changing addition the Panthers need to bolster their offense after a defensive spending spree?

The Carolina Panthers have made a splash in NFL free agency by bolstering their defense, signing edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and linebacker Devin Lloyd. But as the dust settles, the focus shifts to how they can support their young quarterback, Bryce Young.

The Panthers are in the market for offensive reinforcements, particularly at wide receiver or tight end. With Xavier Legette's performance raising concerns and Ja'Tavion Sanders not living up to expectations, the team has some decisions to make. Will they address these needs through the NFL Draft?

Josh Liskiewitz of Pro Football Focus has some thoughts, projecting that the Panthers might snag USC wide receiver Makai Lemon with the 19th overall pick. Lemon's quickness and ability to create separation make him an ideal complement to 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan.

At USC last season, Lemon turned 31 of his 79 receptions into explosive plays and forced 21 missed tackles, showcasing his knack for making things happen after the catch. His impressive ball skills were on display as he secured 10 of 15 contested targets.

Lemon is considered one of the top three receivers in this year's draft, alongside Ohio State's Carnell Tate and Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson. Unlike the bigger-bodied Tate and Tyson, Lemon stands at 5-foot-11 and 192 pounds. However, with the Panthers already featuring the towering 6-foot-5 McMillan and 6-foot-3 Jalen Coker, Lemon's agility and speed could add a new dimension to their offense.

In 2025, Lemon recorded 79 receptions for 1,156 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 14.6 yards per catch. After joining USC in 2023, he truly emerged in his second season, catching 52 passes for 764 yards and three touchdowns.

With the Panthers having shored up their defense, turning their attention to the offensive side in the draft seems plausible. However, selecting a wide receiver for the third consecutive year is a bold move.

Yet, equipping Young with more weapons could be crucial as they gear up for the 2026 season. The decision remains to be seen, but the potential for an explosive offense is certainly on the horizon.
