The Carolina Panthers are eyeing a potential game-changer for their pass rush. After last season's efforts with signings like Pat Jones and Tershawn Wharton, along with drafting Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen, didn’t quite hit the mark, the Panthers are back in the hunt for defensive reinforcements.
Jonathan DeLong from Cat Scratch Reader has highlighted Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Jonathan Greenard as a possible target for the Panthers, should he become available. The Vikings are facing a tough cap situation, and releasing Greenard could save them nearly $19 million if designated as a post-June 1 cut.
Despite a down year in 2025, with 38 tackles and three sacks, Greenard isn't far removed from his back-to-back 12-sack seasons. If he can regain that form, he could be a significant boost to Carolina's defense. However, Greenard’s recent shoulder surgery, which sidelined him for five games, adds a layer of risk.
If Greenard is cut, the Panthers might have the opportunity to bring him in on a one-year, incentive-heavy deal. The allure of joining a team that clinched the NFC South and is on an upward trajectory might just make Carolina an appealing destination for Greenard.
Yet, Greenard alone won’t solve all the Panthers' pass-rushing needs. They'll likely need to look towards the NFL Draft to further bolster their defensive front.
