Panthers coach Dave Canales is making a strategic shift this season by handing over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Brad Idzik. However, the real focus is on quarterback Bryce Young taking the reins on the field.
As Young matures in his command of the Panthers' offense, Canales envisions him making more audibles at the line of scrimmage, exploiting defensive mismatches.
"Bryce is diving deep into our system and concepts," Canales shared. "His progress in managing our operations, making smart calls, and addressing protection issues is impressive.
He’s finding ways to capitalize on defensive coverages and different fronts for run plays. We want him to keep growing in these areas because his ability to impact the game at the line is crucial."
A prime example of Young's potential came during a playoff matchup, where he audibled to a 52-yard pass to Jalen Coker. Canales highlighted this play as a testament to Young's preparation and quick decision-making.
"He recognized the coverage and executed a big play to Jalen Coker," Canales noted. "It was all about his study, understanding, and seizing the moment. We’re eager for more instances like that from Bryce."
As Young enters his fourth NFL season, this ability to make impactful decisions at the line is the next significant step for both him and the Panthers.
