Bryce Young May Be Changing Everything Panthers Fans Feared About Him

As Bryce Young impresses at Panthers training camp, hopes rise for a breakout season that could redefine his role and future with the team.

Bryce Young is making a strong early statement at Panthers training camp, and the people watching closest are noticing.

Through the first week in Carolina, Young has looked sharp enough to fuel real optimism about what comes next for him and for the Panthers’ future. Charlotte Observer reporter Scott Fowler said Young has been outstanding in camp, and he didn’t hold back in describing what he sees developing.

“But I’m here to tell you, based on whatever institutional knowledge I’ve acquired from covering these Carolina Panthers for 32 straight seasons, that what Young is doing in practice right now in training camp is about to lead to a really good - and possibly great - season for him," Fowler wrote. "And it will lead to a massive new contract, too.”

Fowler also said Wednesday was Young’s best practice ever, with the quarterback “made one dazzling throw after another, firing the ball into windows the size of portholes.”

The highlights came in bunches. Young connected with Xavier Legette on a deep ball in the end zone, found Tetairoa McMillan for another touchdown, and also delivered an accurate throw on the run while escaping pressure.

Jaycee Horn saw the same thing from the other side of the ball.

“I kind of notice Bryce is trusting his receivers more, putting the ball in the air, letting them come make plays," Horn said before admitting that the offense "whooped our ass today."

That matters even more when you consider the Panthers’ secondary. Horn and Mike Jackson have given Carolina one of the better cornerback tandems in the league, so Young’s success against that group carries extra weight.

Head coach Dave Canales said Young is showing clear growth.

“Bryce is continuing to just take the next steps,” Canales said. “What I see from Bryce right now is just ownership and mastery of the concepts."

Canales also pointed to Young’s timing, rhythm and anticipation as areas where he has improved.

Of course, Young can’t do it alone. Carolina needs more from its receivers to help him keep this momentum going, and McMillan, Jalen Coker and Legette have all reportedly looked good so far.

Legette’s role has become even more important after rookie Chris Brazzell suffered a season-ending injury, a setback that hits the receiving group hard, especially if Legette doesn’t deliver once the regular season arrives.

For now, though, the Panthers’ offense is trending in the right direction, and Young is looking every bit like a quarterback ready to take off.

Panthers Suddenly Need A New Answer Off The Edge

Nic Scourtons season-ending ACL injury in training camp has forced the Panthers to rethink the edge rusher picture before the year even begins. What had looked like a chance for the rookie to carve out a role has instead opened the door wider for second-year pass rusher Princely Umanmielen, who now looks positioned for a much bigger workload as Carolina sorts out its rotation on the outside.

The opportunity is there, and so is the pressure that comes with it. Umanmielen is expected to get more snaps and compete for a starting job opposite Jaelan Phillips, who has already spoken highly of his pass-rushing ability. For a Panthers defense trying to stabilize one of its most important positions, the next few weeks should tell them plenty about whether Umanmielen is ready to become part of the answer. Xavier Legette Steps Up After Panthers Lose Key Piece

Chris Brazzells season-ending knee ligament injury changed the Panthers receiving outlook in a hurry, removing one of the younger players the staff had hoped could grow into a bigger role. With the depth chart suddenly thinner, Carolina now has to lean more heavily on its more established options, and head coach Dave Canales has pointed to Xavier Legette as a player ready to absorb more of the load.

Legette, entering his third year, has drawn positive reviews throughout training camp for being in better physical condition and cutting down on mental errors. The Panthers have viewed that progress as a sign he can be a more reliable piece of the offense, and with Brazzell out, the opportunity to prove it has only gotten bigger. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers WR3 Battle Just Took A Turn Fans Had To See

Chris Brazzell IIs knee injury has changed the look of Carolinas wide receiver room at a time when the Panthers were already sorting out the back half of the depth chart. The minor LCL tear is expected to lead to season-ending surgery, and with Brazzell now sidelined, the conversation shifts quickly to who can seize the opening behind the top options.

For a team trying to settle its WR3 picture, the timing matters as much as the injury itself. Xavier Legette, JaSeem Reed and John Metchie are among the players who can benefit from the vacancy, and the next stretch of camp and roster decisions should tell the story of who has the inside track to stick and who can emerge as a real part of the offense.
