The Carolina Panthers finally got their Sunday Night Football moment in Charlotte, and Bryce Young made sure it counted.
Carolina beat the Detroit Lions 32-26 in Week 4, holding off a late surge to move to 2-2 before heading into the bye week. It was the Panthers’ first time hosting Sunday Night Football in 11 seasons, and they made the night matter with a performance built around Young, a sharp passing game, and just enough defense at the end.
The Panthers had to survive a tense finish after building a 32-19 cushion on a Ryan Fitzgerald field goal with 8:59 left. Detroit answered by stopping Carolina on third and 20 in Panthers territory, then chose to punt.
After getting the ball back, Jared Goff found Sam LaPorta for a touchdown to trim the margin to 32-26. The Lions then forced a stop on defense, giving themselves one last opening.
Carolina closed the door.
Detroit needed a first down after pulling within six, but the Panthers got to Goff with a sack and then forced back-to-back incompletions to end the drive. Carolina then ran out the clock with kneel-downs.
Still, the night belonged to Young.
With the Panthers leading 7-6 early, Young connected with Tetairoa McMillan on a 32-yard touchdown to stretch the advantage. After the teams traded blows for much of the night, Carolina came out of halftime with more punch. Young found McMillan again, this time on a 10-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 22-16.
The Panthers kept stacking points from there. After a Jake Bates field goal, Chuba Hubbard scored from two yards out to make it 29-19.
That was Hubbard’s second touchdown of the game. Fitzgerald later added another field goal before LaPorta’s late score finished the night’s scoring.
Young’s line was the kind that turns heads: 29 completions on 41 attempts for 329 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 110.7 passer rating. He also moved into the NFL lead in passing yards through four weeks.
Coming off a Week 3 loss to Cleveland, Carolina needed this one. And beyond the result, the Panthers got a clearer picture of what their offense can look like when Young is dealing, McMillan is winning through the air and Hubbard is finishing drives on the ground.

Jahmyr Gibbs Just Gave Panthers Fans The Weirdest SNF Moment Yet
Sunday Night Football had already given Panthers fans enough to process, but Jahmyr Gibbs added a strange little detour when he introduced himself as being from Hollywood Arts, the fictional school from the TV show Victorious. The moment stood out immediately during the Lions-Panthers matchup, because it was not the kind of standard pregame or broadcast detail viewers usually hear on a national stage.
Social media lit up over the reference, which landed as one of those only-on-SNF oddities that travels fast beyond the game itself. Gibbs has drawn attention before for reasons outside football, including a tattoo, so this latest bit of off-field flair only added to the sense that he keeps finding unexpected ways to stay in the conversation. Panthers Made A Prime-Time Statement Despite One Troubling Issue
Sunday night felt like a long-awaited showcase for Carolina, and the Panthers delivered one of their sharper offensive outings in a decade. It was their first appearance on Sunday Night Football in 10 years, and the group around Bryce Young looked organized enough to make the stage feel a little bigger than the moment. The game also offered a useful snapshot of how this roster is coming together, with Brad Idziks offense finding answers and Ejiro Everos defense doing enough to keep the night competitive.
Still, the film left one issue hard to ignore. The offensive line had rough patches, with Luke Fortner and Robert Hunt both showing their struggles, even as Young kept playing effectively under pressure and Chuba Hubbard turned in a breakout performance. Akayleb Evans had mixed results in coverage, which is the kind of uneven stretch Carolina can live with only if the protection in front of the quarterback steadies itself soon. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Win Showed Real Growth But Left One New Concern
The Panthers primetime win over the Lions did more than add another result to the ledger. It offered a clear snapshot of a team that looked more connected on both sides of the ball, with the offense finding a better balance between the pass game and the run game and Bryce Young delivering a spotless evening as a passer. Even with the defense missing its top two cornerbacks, Carolina still found enough stability to control enough of the night and show that the progress it has been chasing is starting to show up in games that matter.
Devin Lloyds return gave the defense a lift, but the performance also pointed to where the next step has to come. The Panthers did not consistently get enough pressure on Jared Goff, and that kind of issue can linger even after a good win if it is not cleaned up. There was also concern after injuries to Monroe Freeling and Jaelan Phillips, two absences that could matter quickly if the team is forced to navigate them for any length of time. [Read more 🡒]
