Bryce Young Just Gave Panthers Fans A Reason To Believe

The Carolina Panthers shine in their Sunday Night Football return, with standout performances to seal a hard-fought victory over the Detroit Lions.

Bryce Young kept firing, Tetairoa McMillan kept catching, and the Carolina Panthers kept the Detroit Lions on their heels all night in a 32-26 win Sunday in Charlotte.

Young finished 29 of 41 for 329 yards and two touchdowns, and he fed McMillan over and over in a breakout performance from the rookie receiver. McMillan hauled in 14 passes for a career-high 192 yards and both of Young’s scoring throws, giving Carolina the kind of outside weapon it badly needed with Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette unavailable because of injuries.

The Panthers’ offense was steady from the start. After punting on the opening drive, Carolina ripped off six straight scoring possessions and used a balanced attack to stay in control. Chuba Hubbard did plenty of damage on the ground, running 20 times for a season-high 122 yards and two touchdowns.

McMillan was the centerpiece. He had nine catches for 147 yards in the first half alone, and one of those grabs went for a 32-yard touchdown.

By the end of the night, he had joined Steve Smith Sr. and Patrick Jeffers as the only Carolina players to post at least 10 receptions, 150 receiving yards and two touchdown in a game. He also finished one catch and 9 yards shy of franchise single-game records.

Young looked comfortable from the jump, completing his first 11 passes as he entered Week 4 leading the league in passing yards. That rhythm mattered against a Detroit team that could score in bunches and did just enough in the first half to keep the game close.

Jared Goff threw for 412 yards and a touchdown to Sam LaPorta for the Lions, while Jahmyr Gibbs added 77 yards from scrimmage and scored his seventh touchdown of the season. Detroit also got a huge strike from Jameson Williams, whose 49-yard catch down the middle helped set up Jake Bates’ field goal to tie the game at 16 before halftime.

But the Lions never found the answers defensively after the break. Carolina kept moving the chains, and Young kept finding McMillan in space. Even when Detroit trimmed the margin to 32-26 on LaPorta’s touchdown catch with 3:38 left, McMillan answered with a toe-tapping grab along the right sideline that preserved the clock and pushed the Panthers closer to the finish line.

Detroit still had one last shot. The Lions started their final drive at their own 13 with 2:12 remaining, but Goff and the offense couldn’t get the first down they needed. Young then took a pair of kneel-downs to close it out.

The game came with plenty of injury fallout on both sides. For Detroit, cornerback Rock Ya-Sin left in the second half with a hamstring injury.

For Carolina, rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling, the team’s first-round draft pick, hurt his knee in the third quarter and did not return. Coker was inactive with a quadriceps injury, and linebacker Jaelan Phillips exited in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury.

Jahmyr Gibbs Just Gave Panthers Fans The Weirdest SNF Moment Yet

Sunday Night Football had already given Panthers fans enough to process, but Jahmyr Gibbs added a strange little detour when he introduced himself as being from Hollywood Arts, the fictional school from the TV show Victorious. The moment stood out immediately during the Lions-Panthers matchup, because it was not the kind of standard pregame or broadcast detail viewers usually hear on a national stage.

Social media lit up over the reference, which landed as one of those only-on-SNF oddities that travels fast beyond the game itself. Gibbs has drawn attention before for reasons outside football, including a tattoo, so this latest bit of off-field flair only added to the sense that he keeps finding unexpected ways to stay in the conversation. Panthers Made A Prime-Time Statement Despite One Troubling Issue

Sunday night felt like a long-awaited showcase for Carolina, and the Panthers delivered one of their sharper offensive outings in a decade. It was their first appearance on Sunday Night Football in 10 years, and the group around Bryce Young looked organized enough to make the stage feel a little bigger than the moment. The game also offered a useful snapshot of how this roster is coming together, with Brad Idziks offense finding answers and Ejiro Everos defense doing enough to keep the night competitive.

Still, the film left one issue hard to ignore. The offensive line had rough patches, with Luke Fortner and Robert Hunt both showing their struggles, even as Young kept playing effectively under pressure and Chuba Hubbard turned in a breakout performance. Akayleb Evans had mixed results in coverage, which is the kind of uneven stretch Carolina can live with only if the protection in front of the quarterback steadies itself soon. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Win Showed Real Growth But Left One New Concern

The Panthers primetime win over the Lions did more than add another result to the ledger. It offered a clear snapshot of a team that looked more connected on both sides of the ball, with the offense finding a better balance between the pass game and the run game and Bryce Young delivering a spotless evening as a passer. Even with the defense missing its top two cornerbacks, Carolina still found enough stability to control enough of the night and show that the progress it has been chasing is starting to show up in games that matter.

Devin Lloyds return gave the defense a lift, but the performance also pointed to where the next step has to come. The Panthers did not consistently get enough pressure on Jared Goff, and that kind of issue can linger even after a good win if it is not cleaned up. There was also concern after injuries to Monroe Freeling and Jaelan Phillips, two absences that could matter quickly if the team is forced to navigate them for any length of time. [Read more 🡒]
