Bryce Young’s next contract with the Carolina Panthers could end up living in rarefied air.
That’s the read from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, who laid out just how high the bar may be for the former No. 1 overall pick if he wants a long-term extension in Carolina. Breer’s message was blunt: Young has to show enough this fall to make the Panthers comfortable paying him more than $50 million per year.
“The Panthers look poised to head into the fourth year of Bryce Young’s contract, and it is, to be clear, a critical one for everyone involved. Yes, they’ve exercised his fifth-year option for 2027 at $25.9 million. But if Young doesn’t look like the kind of guy the team would want to invest a deal at more than $50 million per year in this fall, then Carolina will become a suitor for a quarterback next spring.”
Carolina already locked in Young’s fifth-year option in the spring, which keeps him under team control for the next two seasons. His cap number sits at just over $12 million in 2026 before jumping to $25.9 million in 2027.
The benchmark Breer points to is no small thing. Right now, 12 quarterbacks are making at least $50 million per year on average, and the list is packed with names that come with major hardware - All-Pros, MVPs and Super Bowl champions. Patrick Mahomes leads the way at $64 million, with Jalen Hurts at $51 million.
There’s also the reality of a rising salary cap. What feels massive today won’t hit quite as hard a year or two from now, and Breer noted that the league’s steady cap growth will keep pushing more quarterbacks into that $50 million range.
So the number is out there, and it’s a big one. Whether Young gets there may be decided soon.
