Bryce Young Has Panthers Fans Asking How Real This NFC South Push Is

Deck: Despite a mixed start to the season, the Carolina Panthers' recent triumph over the Detroit Lions has reignited their playoff hopes, setting them apart in a closely contested NFC South.

The Carolina Panthers may be sitting atop the NFC South during the bye week, but the division picture is still hazy enough that nobody is ready to hand them anything.

That said, Sunday night’s 32-26 win over the Detroit Lions was the kind of result that changes how people look at a team. Detroit came in with real playoff expectations, and Carolina handled the moment. It was a statement win, and it gave the Panthers a much-needed lift after their Week 4 trip to Cleveland.

The offense had the kind of night that turns heads. Bryce Young and Tetairoa McMillan were the engine behind it, with McMillan delivering his best performance of the season: 14 catches, 192 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns.

Young, meanwhile, topped 300 passing yards for the third time this year. Against a Detroit defense that was rough around the edges, the connection between quarterback and receiver was as sharp as it needed to be.

Even with that momentum, Carolina still isn’t being treated like a runaway favorite. In CBS Sports’ latest NFL tier rankings from Jared Dublin, the Panthers landed in the “probably about average” tier.

They weren’t alone there, either. The Atlanta Falcons joined them after finishing Week 4 with a 45-24 road win over the New Orleans Saints.

Atlanta’s win added another wrinkle to the division race. With Michael Penix Jr. back in uniform, the Falcons showed off an offense that looked dangerous again, and the result marked their second straight dominant road victory. Like Carolina, they don’t look like a team with a true contender’s ceiling just yet, but they’ve done enough to make the conversation a real one.

Below Carolina and Atlanta, CBS placed both the Buccaneers and Saints in the “probably not that good” tier. With those two teams sitting at a combined 2-7, they’re in a different lane from the Panthers and Falcons right now.

There’s also one odd little divider working in Carolina’s favor: the Panthers are the only NFC South team with a home win in the 2026 season. Every other division victory through four weeks has come away from home, including Carolina’s own win over Detroit on Sunday Night Football.

And even if Atlanta was without Michael Penix Jr. for part of that stretch and the quarterback play was rough, Carolina still carved up that defense. The Panthers are the only team through four weeks to score 30 or more points against the Falcons, and they did it on the road. Seven of those points came from the defense, but Bryce Young and the offense still got what they wanted against a talented Atlanta unit.

The next divisional test comes back at Bank of America Stadium, where Carolina will host the now 1-4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are currently starting an undrafted free agent at quarterback. The Panthers have a difficult four weeks ahead, but they’ve got a chance to keep this season pointed in the right direction.

Panthers May Finally Have Their Defensive Centerpiece Again

Devin Lloyds latest outing against Atlanta gave Carolina exactly the kind of defensive spark this group has been missing. The Panthers linebacker was everywhere, piling up nine tackles, picking off two passes, breaking up three others and adding a sack, a performance that quickly pushed him into the center of the conversation around the defense.

Dave Canales and teammate Jaelan Phillips were quick to praise both Lloyds production and his leadership, and with good reason. He was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after becoming the first NFL linebacker since 1982 to hit that combination in one game, a reminder that Carolina may finally have its defensive centerpiece back in full view. Bryce Young Is Finally Giving Panthers Fans A Reason To Believe

Bryce Youngs rise has given the Panthers something they have not had enough of in recent years: a quarterback trend worth watching for the right reasons. The 2023 No. 1 overall pick first flashed it in that playoff game against the Rams, and since then he has carried that momentum into a strong 2026 season under Dave Canales, with Carolinas offense looking more cohesive and more dangerous than it has in a while.

What makes it matter in Charlotte is not just the production, but the way it has come together around him. Young has navigated injuries to key teammates and still found ways to keep the offense moving, including a scheme built around run-pass options that seems to fit his game well. After four years of gradual improvement, the Panthers are finally in a place where their franchise quarterback is giving fans a real reason to believe, even if the larger picture is still taking shape. Dave Canales Made One Sacrifice That Could Change The Panthers

Dave Canales made one of the more notable coaching adjustments of his first season in Carolina before the year even began, handing play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Brad Idzik so he could spend more of game day managing the bigger picture. It is a shift that puts Canales in a different kind of role on the sideline, one centered less on the next snap and more on the flow of the entire afternoon, with an eye toward supporting players and keeping the operation steady in real time.

For a Panthers team sitting at 2-2, the move adds another layer to a season still taking shape. Canales has made it clear he values the chance to use his emotional intelligence during games, but the real test will come over the long haul, as Carolina continues to see whether the decision helps the coach be more effective and the offense more consistent.
