Bryce Young Faces A Brutal Panthers Test In Green Bay

Key one-on-one battles will determine if the Panthers can outmaneuver the Packers in this critical Thursday showdown.

The Panthers are back in the prime-time spotlight Thursday night, and this one comes with a trip to Green Bay and four matchups that could swing the whole thing. Carolina already proved it can handle the stage once this season, beating Jared Goff and the Lions in a wild Week 4 Sunday night game. If the Panthers want another one under the lights, they’ll need a few of their key players to win their one-on-one battles.

Start with Bryce Young and the Packers’ defensive approach. Young had his roughest outing of 2026 last week against Tampa Bay, absorbing five sacks and turning it over three times.

Green Bay will almost certainly study that film closely. Jonathan Gannon could lean into a blitz-heavy plan like Todd Bowles used, or he may try to create heat in other ways.

Either way, Young has been hit with more quick pressure than any quarterback in the league this year, and he has to keep his composure after what happened against the Bucs.

Carolina also needs more from Jalen Coker. He caught only one of four targets for nine yards in Week 7, and that wasn’t a one-off against Green Bay - he posted the same line in last year’s meeting with the Packers.

The Panthers’ offense has taken steps forward, but it doesn’t have the depth to absorb too many quiet games from its second-best pass catcher. Coker needs to make life harder on Javon Bullard, who has six pass breakups, but has also given up two touchdowns and an 88.0 passer rating in coverage.

There’s also a rookie-on-rookie battle in the trenches. With starting center Sean Rhyan out after suffering a high-ankle sprain against Detroit on Sunday, the Packers may be forced to roll with Jager Burton in the middle.

That gives Lee Hunter a chance to make his mark. Hunter has flashed, but the production hasn’t followed yet - he has one quarterback hit, no sacks and no tackles for a loss.

Against Burton, a fifth-round pick, this feels like the kind of spot where Hunter can finally break through and give Carolina’s struggling defensive line a boost.

The toughest assignment on the night may belong to Will Lee III. Carolina is still thin on the outside without Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, and that leaves Lee facing Christian Watson in a matchup that looks steep on paper.

The 2026 fourth-rounder has held up reasonably well so far, allowing a 50-percent completion rate and a 75.4 passer rating. But Watson brings a clear size edge and arrives with 34 catches, 595 yards and six touchdowns.

Thursday night should tell us plenty about whether Carolina can keep riding its prime-time momentum.

Panthers Loss Revealed Who Actually Held Up In Week 8

The Panthers Week 8 loss to Green Bay did more than add another result to the record. It also offered a useful look at which players managed to steady a lineup dealing with a makeshift offensive line and a thin cornerback group, and Pro Football Focus grades helped sort out who held up when the pressure mounted. Corey Bullock came out as the top performer up front, while Lee Hunter stood out on the defensive side in a game where Carolina needed reliable snaps wherever it could find them.

For a roster trying to survive injuries and patchwork depth, those evaluations matter because they point to more than just one rough afternoon. They show which pieces were able to function in a difficult setup and which areas still need help, especially on a defense that was already stretched at cornerback. The grades do not change the loss, but they do sharpen the picture of who the Panthers can lean on as the season keeps moving. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Defensive Shakeup Puts One Big Question On Struggling Unit

The Panthers made a significant defensive change this week, parting ways with Ejiro Evero and turning the unit over to Todd Wash on an interim basis. Wash brings plenty of NFL experience with him, including past stops as a defensive coordinator with the Jaguars and work as a defensive line coach for multiple teams, while Carolina also widened AC Carters responsibilities in the shuffle.

For a defense that has struggled to find its footing, the move signals urgency as much as it does a fresh start. The coaching staff is being reorganized beyond the coordinator spot, too, with Jonathan Cooley released as the Panthers try to reset a group that has not produced the kind of consistency the organization needs. The biggest question now is whether the new structure can stabilize the unit quickly enough to matter. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Just Sent A Clear Message About Their Biggest Problem

The Panthers moved quickly after their Week 8 loss to the Packers, parting ways with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive pass-game coordinator Jonathan Cooley in a clear sign that the defense had become the teams most urgent problem. Carolina pointed to the units struggles against the run and the steady stream of points it has allowed, making the changes less about one bad afternoon than a broader breakdown that had been building for weeks.

Todd Walsh will step in as interim defensive coordinator beginning in Week 9, giving the Panthers a new voice in charge of a defense that has been under heavy scrutiny. For a team trying to stabilize its season, the move puts the spotlight on whether a midstream reset can fix the issues that have been dragging the roster down and whether the front office is prepared to keep making changes if the response does not come quickly.
