Bryce Young Decision Could Define The Panthers Sooner Than Expected

As contract negotiations progress, the Carolina Panthers are close to securing a lucrative long-term deal with Bryce Young, signaling their commitment to making him the cornerstone of the franchise.

Bryce Young’s next Panthers contract may be closer than anyone thought.

On Wednesday, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that Carolina and Young are “far down the road” toward a second deal, with the quarterback’s next contract projected to land at $50 million per year. That figure lines up with earlier reports from the offseason, and it comes as both sides continue to move toward a long-term arrangement.

Young and C.J. Stroud were linked from the moment they went first and second in the 2023 NFL Draft, and now both are entering a pivotal fourth season without long-term deals in place.

Each quarterback had his fifth-year option picked up earlier in the offseason, and both have played well enough to keep extension talks front and center. Stroud, according to reports, already turned down an extension from Houston and is looking for a bigger payday.

For Young, the conversation has been quieter - until now.

He remains under contract through 2027, and his guaranteed salary next season is $25.904 million. If no new agreement comes before then, Carolina could also franchise him for 2028.

The Panthers’ stance appears clear. The report says they are eager to get a deal done and keep Young in place for the long haul. Given how hard it is to find a quarterback, that kind of commitment makes sense if a team believes it has the right one.

There’s also no indication Carolina has lost faith in him. At one point earlier this season, the Panthers’ offense had people thinking it might be a top-10 unit, with Young playing at an MVP level. That has cooled off, though, and he has struggled during the team’s two-game losing streak.

Still, the bigger picture in Carolina hasn’t changed much. The Panthers appear interested in locking Young up, and the alternative - going back into the quarterback hunt - likely isn’t appealing right now.

At the same time, the team needs Young to keep producing. The NFC South remains down, and Carolina still has a chance to win the division again.

Panthers Finally Have Injury Hope At The Worst Time To Need It

After a season spent piecing together lineups on the fly, Carolina is finally getting a little healthier at a time when it can least afford more attrition. Xavier Legette, Jonathon Brooks, Mike Jackson, Jaelan Phillips, Jaycee Horn and Brady Christensen have all been taking part in limited practice work, and the Panthers have already opened the 21-day return window for Brooks, Legette and Christensen, a sign that some reinforcements may be closer than they have been in weeks.

Bryce Young is part of that encouraging picture, too. Dave Canales said the quarterback is now ready to rock after dealing with a knee injury, and his mobility has looked better as he works back into form. For a team that has spent most of the year managing injuries instead of building momentum, the timing of even a modest health boost could matter just as much as the names involved. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Trade Talk Just Raised An Uncomfortable Deadline Question

JaTavion Sanders has become one of those names that can surface in trade chatter simply because the fit in Carolina has not been there. ESPN floated a speculative scenario in which the Panthers could send the tight end to the Bears for a sixth-round pick, a reminder that even young players can become movable when they are buried on the depth chart and have spent much of the season inactive.

Chicagos interest would make some sense on paper after losing a tight end for the season, and Sanders could appeal as a depth add for a team trying to patch a thin spot. For Carolina, though, the uncomfortable part is less about the return than the timing, because any discussion like this forces a closer look at how quickly a player can slide from promising piece to trade candidate. Panthers Trade Deadline Debate Starts With One Urgent Roster Question

The trade deadline conversation around Carolina has already turned into a familiar kind of roster audit, with the Panthers weighing where the biggest fix might come from if they decide to be active. Cornerback, defensive line and the offensive line all sit in the discussion, and the list of possible targets has grown to include names like Josh Sweat, Grover Stewart, Cesar Ruiz, Mike Jackson, Landon Dickerson, Riq Woolen and Zach Sieler as the front office tries to sort through which area needs the most immediate help.

Josh Downs also enters the picture as part of the broader debate, which says plenty about how many different directions this roster can still go before the deadline. The Panthers have spent enough time dealing with lingering holes that the question is no longer whether they have needs, but which one is urgent enough to justify a move and whether the right fit is actually available when the clock starts to run down.
