Bryce Young Debate Just Took Another Turn For Panthers Fans

Despite mixed results and contract uncertainty, Bryce Young remains a potential cornerstone for the Panthers under the right conditions, says former GM Marty Hurney.

Former Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney isn’t ready to write off Bryce Young.

In an interview with Jason La Canfora of Casino.us, Hurney said he still believes the Panthers can win with the former No. 1 overall pick, even after Young has gone 14-30-0 as Carolina’s starter.

“I really liked the kid coming out and if you put the right people around him, you can win with Bryce Young,” Hurney said.

Young is coming off a season that showed both progress and production. He threw for 3,011 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, added 216 rushing yards and two rushing scores, and helped lead the Panthers to the playoffs for the first time since the 2017 campaign.

The 2023 No. 1 pick now heads into next season with 8,291 passing yards, 49 passing touchdowns, 30 interceptions, 718 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in a Panthers uniform. He’ll be playing on the fourth year of his rookie deal at $12.1 million, while his fifth-year option is set at a guaranteed $25.9 million.

Still, the long-term picture remains unsettled. Most NFL insiders do not expect Carolina to work out an extension with Young this offseason, largely because of the inconsistency that has followed him so far. Next season looms as a major proving ground if he wants a new deal.

There’s no shortage of belief inside the building, though. Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik is one of Young’s strongest backers, and he made clear he wants the ball in Young’s hands when everything is on the line.

“Just an ultimate competitor and distributor, and he's ice cold in the big moment,” Idzik said about Young, via Panthers.com. “The competitor, for him, looks different.

But every single person in that team meeting room knows, this guy, he's going to give you everything he's got. He's going to extend every play to the very last second.

Go back to Miami last year, down 17, fourth down, and he's buying one extra tick with three guys barreling down on him just to be able to get that ball off to (Tetaroia McMillan) and keep us alive and eventually win the game.

“And then the clutch moments for him, where he doesn't bat an eye, that's just something he's always had. It goes back to Alabama, goes back to Mater Dei; he's a winner, and we've enjoyed watching all those fourth-quarter last-minute drives, giving us a chance in games.”

Young also checked in at No. 98 on the NFL’s Top 100 players list, marking the first time he has appeared on the annual ranking.

Panthers Just Got Linked To A Bryce Young Backup Plan

Bryce Youngs uneven start has kept the Panthers in the conversation any time quarterback speculation comes up, and the latest round of chatter points to Carolina once again being linked to a possible backup plan. The idea is not hard to understand: the franchise still needs to sort out what it has at the position, and any hint of another young quarterback with upside is going to draw attention.

One name being floated around the league is a former top pick whose tools still intrigue evaluators even though the results have been mixed. The appeal is obvious for a team that is still searching for stability under center, but the real question is whether Carolina would see enough value to make a move and try to unlock a different kind of talent than the one already in the room. Bryce Young Is Giving Panthers Fans Real Hope For 2026

Bryce Youngs rise has given Carolina something it has not had in a while: real reason to look past the present and imagine a better 2026. Since returning to the starting lineup in the middle of the 2024 season, Young has trended upward, and the Panthers have ridden that improvement all the way to their first playoff appearance since 2017 and their first NFC South title since 2015.

The optimism is easy to understand, because Young looks like a quarterback whose best football may still be ahead of him. Still, the next step is about more than flashes, and the questions around consistency have not disappeared, especially with his limited history of big-yardage outings. If he keeps building on this stretch, Carolinas outlook gets a lot more interesting. [Read more 🡒]
