Zach Hyman turned a routine penalty sequence into the night’s most replayed moment, and he did it with a grin.
In Edmonton’s 6-5 shootout win over Carolina, the Oilers forward found himself at the center of a heated exchange with Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker. Hyman was already going down when Walker shoved him from behind with a cross-check, and the Oilers winger went to the ice appearing to sell the contact. After the whistle, as Walker headed to the box, Hyman looked up, smiled, and winked.
That tiny gesture set off the internet.
Hurricanes fans were furious, convinced Hyman had embellished the play and then rubbed it in with the wink. Others saw it differently, arguing he simply made sure the officials noticed the penalty - and, as the source noted, it was a penalty. One fan went as far as calling Hyman the “funniest man alive.”
Walker clearly didn’t see the humor. He appeared to believe he had been taken for a ride, and his frustration carried over after the whistle.
But replays showed the cross-check itself was real, and it came at a costly moment for Carolina. The penalty came in a tied game, with the Hurricanes’ penalty kill already having allowed three power-play goals.
The officials had been tracking the back-and-forth between the two players throughout the shift, and Walker seemed to think a prior foul had gone unnoticed. His response to Hyman only made things worse, especially against an Edmonton power play that has been rolling since Hyman returned.
Since his return, that unit has climbed to 31%.
The exchange was just one slice of a game that had the feel of something bigger than a late-October matchup. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each finished with five points, and Edmonton rallied after trailing by two late in the second period. Hyman did not score, though he did have a goal wiped out because of a high stick, and he still played a role in the comeback as the Oilers moved to 8-1-1 on the season.

Jalen Chatfields Future Is Becoming A Real Hurricanes Concern
Jalen Chatfields contract situation is starting to look like one of the more pressing item on Carolinas to-do list. The Hurricanes and the defenseman were unable to strike an extension, and while Chatfield has been a steady part of the blue line, the sides have not found common ground on a new deal.
Since the last attempt to negotiate through Chatfields agent, there have been no further talks, which only adds to the sense that this could be heading toward an open-market decision. For a Hurricanes defense that has come to rely on his consistency, the concern is less about what he has done and more about whether Carolina can keep him from reaching free agency at all. Hurricanes Let A Wild One Slip Away Against Edmonton
The Hurricanes were in the middle of a track meet in Edmonton, and for long stretches it looked like they had enough offense to turn it into a road win. Instead, Connor McDavid kept dragging the Oilers back into it, piling up five points and turning the game into a showcase for one of the leagues most dangerous players. Carolina had to live with a result that never really felt settled, even after both teams traded goals and the pace never let up.
Edmontons surge has now stretched to three straight wins and seven in its last eight, and the finishing touch came in a place Carolina could not match. The shootout tilted the Oilers way behind the return of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who was making his season debut after a lower-body injury. For the Hurricanes, it was the kind of loss that stings because it was there to be taken, then slipped just far enough out of reach. [Read more 🡒]
Hurricanes Got The Boost Fans Wanted But Still Couldnt Finish Edmonton
Seth Jarvis gave Carolina the kind of lift it had been waiting for, returning for his season debut after offseason shoulder surgery and finding the net in a high-scoring game against Edmonton. His presence mattered right away for a Hurricanes team trying to keep pace in a matchup that kept swinging back and forth, even as the Oilers leaned on their top end to drive the action.
Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid combined for a huge night, and the game still needed a shootout to settle it after Carolina fought through a wild 6-5 finish. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins delivered the decisive goal there, giving Edmonton the edge while leaving the Hurricanes with the sort of result that can feel encouraging and frustrating at the same time.
