In the heart of Toronto, Joseph Woll finds himself in a surprising situation. As the Maple Leafs' goaltender, Woll, like his teammates, anticipated being in the heat of a playoff battle. However, after a rough patch post-Olympic break, the Leafs' season has veered off course.
Despite this, Woll is focused on honing his skills during the final weeks of this tumultuous season. In Friday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, Woll showcased his talent with 32 saves against the formidable Eastern Conference leaders. He faced challenges, conceding on a penalty shot and a short-handed breakaway before Alexander Nikishin sealed the game in overtime.
At 27, Woll, hailing from Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, has faced personal challenges this season, stepping away for family reasons. With a record of 1-3-1 in his last five starts and a .914 save percentage, Woll remains a bright spot in a disappointing season for the Leafs (29-28-13).
“Every situation is a learning experience,” Woll shared. “I’m committed to my process and adapting as needed.”
Veteran center John Tavares praised Woll’s consistency and preparation. At 35, Tavares notched his 24th goal of the season during Friday’s game and emphasized the importance of building momentum, even in a challenging season.
“Woll’s approach is steady,” Tavares noted. “He’s giving us chances to win by sticking to his game and continuously improving.”
Benoit-Olivier Groulx, recently called up from the AHL, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Woll’s dedication and focus.
“He’s been incredible,” Groulx said. “His off-ice preparation is meticulous, and it shows in his performance.”
Head coach Craig Berube sees potential for Woll to elevate his game further, acknowledging the need for critical saves during high-pressure moments.
“Against the Hurricanes, we needed that big save,” Berube remarked. “Whether it’s in overtime or on breakaways, those moments are crucial.”
Woll plans to review game footage with goaltending coach Curtis Sanford, particularly focusing on key plays like Eric Robinson’s penalty shot and K’Andre Miller’s short-handed goal. Despite the setbacks, Woll remains confident in his recent performances.
“I’m eager to play as much as I can and contribute to the team’s success,” he said. “Every game is a chance to learn and grow.”
As the season winds down, Tavares is on the brink of joining an elite group of active players with 25 or more goals in 14 seasons, trailing only legends like Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Steven Stamkos. Despite the team’s struggles, Tavares remains committed to making the most of his NHL opportunities.
“You never take playing in the NHL for granted,” Tavares reflected. “It’s been tough, but you always strive to perform well.”
Meanwhile, Groulx is making the most of his opportunity, with five points in six NHL games. Drafted by Anaheim in 2018, he’s found a new stride with the Maple Leafs, showcasing his skills and confidence.
“I’m playing with a lot of belief in myself,” Groulx said. “I know my capabilities, and I’m proving it here.”
Tavares praised Groulx’s hockey intelligence and ability to seize opportunities.
“He’s got a great sense of positioning and makes smart plays,” Tavares noted. “His speed and shot release are impressive, and he’s making the most of his chance.”
In a season filled with challenges, Woll, Tavares, and Groulx are focused on growth and seizing every opportunity on the ice.
