The Carolina Hurricanes wrapped up their brief stint in Raleigh with a matchup against the St. Louis Blues. Their two-game homestand kicked off with a nail-biting 5-4 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, a game made even more special by the presence of some players' mothers, ahead of the team's biennial Mom's Trip this weekend.
Brandon Bussi, who saw his impressive nine-game winning streak come to an end last Saturday, was back between the pipes. He aimed to rebound from a few challenging performances, supported by a familiar lineup. On the other side, the Blues started Jordan Binnington, as they embarked on the first of back-to-back games.
Carolina came out firing in the opening period, dominating play and keeping Binnington busy. Mark Jankowski broke through with a standout solo effort, intercepting a pass, weaving past a defender, and finding the net over Binnington's blocker. Despite their shot advantage, the Canes held just a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The second period saw the Blues respond. Early on, Jimmy Snuggerud capitalized on a screen to launch a shot past Bussi, leveling the score.
The Hurricanes had two power-play opportunities to regain the lead but failed to capitalize. The period ended with both teams locked at one.
In the third, the Blues found a sliver of opportunity to take the lead. A pass around the boards slipped past Jalen Chatfield, landing with Dylan Holloway, who set up Snuggerud for his second goal of the night. With the Canes' net empty, Pavel Buchnevich sealed the deal, giving the Blues a 3-1 victory.
The Hurricanes' fourth line has been a bright spot, with Mark Jankowski continuing his goal streak. His effort was the lone highlight on the scoresheet for Carolina, underscoring the growing importance of the fourth line. Jankowski, alongside Eric Robinson and William Carrier, has been making an impact despite limited minutes, but the rest of the team needs to step up.
Defensively, it was a tough night for some of Carolina's key groups. Two goals against came with the Staal line, along with Jaccob Slavin and Jalen Chatfield, on the ice. On the first, Slavin inadvertently screened Bussi, while on the game-winner, Staal was a step behind Snuggerud.
Despite the loss, Bussi showed improvement, particularly in puck handling, nearly setting up a breakaway on the power play. The Canes had their chances but were thwarted by an outstanding performance from Binnington. Sebastian Aho led with seven shots, and Logan Stankoven hit the post, showcasing the offensive pressure that just couldn't find the back of the net.
Looking ahead, the Hurricanes, accompanied by their moms, head to Tampa Bay for a Saturday night showdown. This game wraps up the season series between two of the East's top teams. Following that, they face another road challenge in Columbus on Tuesday, kicking off a back-to-back that concludes in Raleigh against the Penguins on Wednesday.
