Veteran winger Anderson is getting a shot to play preseason hockey, but it’s coming at the AHL level for now.
Hershey, the Capitals’ affiliate, announced its training camp roster today and Anderson is on it after signing a PTO with the club. The 28-year-old has played 169 NHL games across parts of seven seasons, producing 19 goals and 21 assists.
He’s also coming off a strong year in Rockford, where he put up 17 goals and 33 points in 2025-26, giving him 199 points in 264 AHL games. Anderson had looked like a candidate for a two-way NHL deal this summer, but at the moment he appears to still have work to do just to land an AHL contract.
Around the hockey world, Dan Cleary is set for a new title in Detroit’s system. Cleary, who spent years as a Red Wings player and has been in their front office since 2017, is expected to move from Assistant Director of Player Development to GM of AHL Grand Rapids, according to Daily Faceoff’s Anthony DiMarco.
That opening was held by Shawn Horcoff, who is now Detroit’s interim GM. With Horcoff’s old job being filled, it points to him staying in charge in Detroit for a while as the search for a permanent GM goes on.
Alex Formenton, meanwhile, drew more interest than just Edmonton before ultimately signing with the Oilers. TSN’s Darren Dreger said in an appearance on The Nielson Show that the Hurricanes and Golden Knights were also in the mix to bring him back to North America.
In the end, Formenton’s ties to defenseman Evan Bouchard and assistant coach D.J. Smith, who coached him in Ottawa, helped push him toward Edmonton.
In San Jose, Adam Gaudette still hasn’t returned to the ice even though he had been expected back by now. Max Miller of Sharks Hockey Digest reported that the veteran forward is dealing with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day.
Gaudette scored 17 goals last season in a limited role, though the Sharks’ offseason additions could make it tougher for him to find minutes. Miller also reported that winger Patrick Giles is day-to-day with an upper-body injury suffered on Tuesday.
Giles appeared in three games for San Jose last season and recorded one assist.
