The Carolina Hurricanes left St. Louis with exactly what they needed on Saturday night: a clean finish.
After dropping a 6-5 shootout decision to Edmonton on Thursday, a game they led for much of the way, Carolina responded with a 4-0 win over the Blues to close out its road trip on a high note. It was the Hurricanes’ first shutout victory of the season, and it came with Pyotr Kochetkov in net and Joel Hofer on the other side, the same goalie who had blanked Carolina with 33 saves in this building in January.
The game started slowly, with both teams spending the opening period feeling each other out. Carolina didn’t exactly burst out of the gate, but it gradually found its footing as the frame moved along. Neither side found the net, though both goalies had to be sharp while playing outside the blue paint and handling a few uneasy moments.
Everything opened up for the Hurricanes in the second period. After drawing a tripping penalty, Jackson Blake made a strong pass to Sean Walker between the circles for the first goal.
Just 20 seconds later, Jesperi Kotkaniemi finished a give-and-go with Jordan Martinook to make it 2-0. Then, late in the period, Seth Jarvis turned a strong penalty kill into a breakout chance for Logan Stankoven, who scored on the breakaway to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Carolina added one more in the third when Nikolaj Ehlers scored his fourth goal of the trip into an empty net during the team’s lone power play of the night. From there, the only thing left to settle was whether Kochetkov could finish the shutout, and with help from his defense, he did just that.
Kochetkov’s night didn’t start cleanly. He turned the puck over on the first shift and had one more shaky moment later in the opening period, but he settled in and delivered his strongest outing of the season.
One of his best stops came early in the second, when a turnover by Ehlers at the offensive blue line sent Connor McMichael in alone on a breakaway. Kochetkov came up with the glove save, and Carolina scored soon after.
As the game wore on, Kochetkov became more composed with the puck, especially during the second-period penalty kill. Hofer, meanwhile, spent much of the night behind his net trying to be aggressive with the puck and seemed to be pressing after a difficult performance. Kochetkov made the harder night look simpler.
The turning point for Carolina’s offense came right after the second period began. Blake stayed with the play after drawing the trip, worked the puck into the right spot, and set up Walker for the opener, picking up his 100th career point in the process.
Kotkaniemi followed with his third goal of the road trip, and from there the Hurricanes had control. Brind'Amour didn’t label Stankoven’s goal a “backbreaker”, but it changed the tone completely.
The penalty kill was excellent, Jarvis helped create the chance, and the Hurricanes never let St. Louis back into it.
Carolina finished the trip at 3-1-1, collecting seven of a possible 10 points over the eight-day stretch. Given the flu running through the locker room and the injuries the team has been dealing with, that’s a strong way to head home. The Hurricanes remain atop the division and among the best teams in the conference, and this trip showed contributions from all over the lineup.
The margin between a near-perfect road swing and this one was thin. One costly transition breakdown in Calgary and the blown lead in Edmonton were the difference between better and best. Even so, Carolina handled the adversity, locked in for its final stop, and returns to Raleigh on a good note before facing Boston to open a three-game homestand on Tuesday.

Seth Jarvis Just Reminded Hurricanes Fans What They Were Missing
Seth Jarvis was back in the Carolina lineup against the Oilers, and the timing mattered as much as the performance. After spending the summer recovering from shoulder surgery, the forward returned for his first game since June and looked like a player eager to reassert himself in a group that has leaned on his energy, pace and knack for creating offense.
Jarvis did not waste much time making an impression, scoring on his return while also chipping in physically and generating chances. He said afterward that he still has work to do defensively, which is a fair note in a game that showed both the upside of having him back and the next step he needs to take as he settles in again. Hurricanes End Road Trip With Even More Early-Season Momentum
The road trip ended the way the Hurricanes have wanted so many nights this fall, with a complete performance and another result that keeps the early-season momentum rolling. Carolina shut out the Blues 4-0 to finish the five-game swing at 3-1-1, and the team now sits at 9-2-2 through its first 13 games of the 2026-27 season, a start that has quickly separated it from the pack in the East.
Pyotr Kochetkov was at the center of it again, looking every bit like a goalie who has given Carolina a chance to breathe on most nights. Jackson Blake also continued to leave his mark on the rosters future, reaching a notable personal milestone on Sean Walkers goal and doing so at a pace the Hurricanes have not seen from one of their young players in some time.
