Canes Finally Looked Like Themselves In A Win Fans Needed

The Hurricanes edge past the Flyers with an overtime win, thanks to decisive plays from Gostisbehere and Aho.

Shayne Gostisbehere ended it in overtime, and the Carolina Hurricanes finally got the result they were looking for.

Gostisbehere scored 2:51 into the extra period to push Carolina past the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Saturday. It was the Hurricanes’ first win of the season, and it came after a game that kept swinging back and forth before Carolina finished the job.

The start was exactly what the Canes needed after two “lethargic” home performances. Sebastian Aho scored from the slot just 10 seconds into the game to give Carolina its first lead of the season, a quick jolt that looked much more like the Hurricanes’ usual game. Philadelphia answered later in the first period to tie it up, then took a 2-1 lead in the second on a scramble in front of Carolina’s net.

Even after falling behind, Carolina kept pushing. Rod Brind’Amour’s team controlled play and more than doubled the Flyers’ chances, and the pressure paid off in the third period when Aho struck again, this time on the power play, to even the score at 2-2.

The closing stretch nearly turned against Carolina when Gostisbehere was penalized late in regulation, sending the Hurricanes into overtime with a shorthanded carryover. The kill held, and then the special teams situation flipped when Owen Tippett was called for slashing Aho. That opened the door for Gostisbehere to bury a one-timer and seal it.

Pyotr Kochetkov got the start in goal for Carolina and made his first regular-season appearance since Dec. 20, 2025. He stopped 16 of 18 shots to earn the win.

Gostisbehere Broke Flyers Hearts Again In A Game Carolina Nearly Lost

Shayne Gostisbehere has a knack for making life miserable for his former team, and he did it again in a game Carolina had to survive. The Hurricanes squeezed out an overtime win over Philadelphia, with Gostisbehere finishing it off and extending a pattern that has already made him a recurring problem for the Flyers in clutch moments.

Philadelphia never found much rhythm offensively and also took a hit when Rasmus Ristolainen left with an injury, compounding an already difficult night. Joseph Wolls 37 saves helped Carolina hang around long enough to get the result, and the Hurricanes came away with their third win of the season while the Flyers were left wondering how many more familiar ghosts they can afford to chase. Hurricanes Found A Much Needed Answer In Their First Road Win

The Hurricanes first road trip of the season carried a little more meaning than just another early-night stop in Philadelphia. Carolina got Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Mike Reilly into the lineup for their season debuts, while Pyotr Kochetkov got the start in goal as the club looked for a steadier answer away from home after opening the year on its own ice.

Carolina found one in overtime, where the offense finally broke through on the power play to finish a game that had plenty riding on it for an early October checkpoint. For a team still sorting out its rhythm and trying to settle new faces into the mix, the win gave the Hurricanes a useful lift and a clearer path heading into the rest of the road slate. Hurricanes Finally Looked Like Themselves In First Win Of Season

After two games that left plenty of room for concern, Carolina finally settled into a familiar rhythm in its 3-2 overtime win over Philadelphia, the kind of night that looked a lot more like the Hurricanes teams people have come to expect. Sebastian Aho set the tone with an assertive night at the offensive end, and the group around him backed it up with the kind of structure and urgency that had been missing to start the season.

Special teams were a big part of the turnaround, with Carolina handling its penalty situations cleanly and giving Pyotr Kochetkov enough support to stay in the game and make the key stops when needed. Kochetkov had a few shaky moments, but he still came away with the win after coming through when it mattered most, and for a team looking to reset its early-season narrative, that was the sort of response it needed.
