The Carolina Hurricanes get one more night in Raleigh before heading overseas, and they’ll spend it in fresh threads. Saturday’s matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks will be the first time the Canes wear their Hometown Remix jerseys, with the focus staying squarely on the task in front of them after a win over the Islanders got them back on track.
That victory on Thursday wasn’t exactly clean, but Carolina found a way. Logan Stankoven and Jesperi Kotkaniemi jumped on the Islanders early, only for New York to answer and erase the lead twice. Andrei Svechnikov put the Canes back in front again, the Islanders tied it once more, and then William Carrier hammered home a rebound with a little more than five minutes left to seal a 5-3 win.
Chicago comes in as a team still searching for answers. The Blackhawks have the second-fewest points in the league with 9 and the second-worst points percentage at .265, and the numbers around them are just as rough. They’re 31st in goals per game scored, goals per game, goals allowed, goals allowed per game, and they sit dead last on the power play.
Since Carolina saw them in Chicago almost a month ago, the Blackhawks have gone 3-7-1 and dropped further in the standings. They’re also in the middle of a demanding stretch, playing their third game in four days on a road trip through the Southeast after back-to-back losses in Florida. They’re on a five-game losing streak heading into Raleigh, and they’re going to come in desperate.
The last meeting between these teams turned quickly. Mark Jankowski broke a scoreless tie in the final minute of the first period, and the Hurricanes blew the game open from there with three goals in the opening 6:05 of the second period. That surge carried Carolina to a 5-2 win over the Blackhawks.
Chicago’s youth remains a defining part of the story. Connor Bedard leads the team with 12 points despite missing six games, and the Blackhawks are still waiting for that talent to fully click. They’re a few years away from being truly competitive, even if the fan base is already growing impatient.
Carolina’s injury picture has cleared up a bit. Taylor Hall is back from his upper-body issues, leaving Alexander Nikishin and Jordan Staal as the only Canes still sidelined. ESPN’s Emily Kaplan suggested Nikishin should be ready within the next few games, while Staal continues to work back from a partially torn calf and still doesn’t have a clear timetable.
Chicago has a few notable absences of its own. Bowen Byram, the big offseason addition, hasn’t played since October 13 because of a lower-body injury and was recently placed on IR, though there’s still a chance he could go tonight. Patrick Kane won’t be in the lineup either; Jeff Blashill said he’ll miss the next few games, so Showtime stays out for this one.
There are a few names worth keeping an eye on. Roman Kantserov leads all rookies with eight goals and kept Chicago from being shut out against Tampa Bay by scoring in the final minute of regulation.
That goal stretched his point streak to seven games and his goal streak to three, with five goals coming during the run. Connor Bedard is back in the lineup and has become the center of everything Chicago does, even after his seven-game point streak was snapped Thursday.
William Carrier, meanwhile, gave Carolina the winner against the Islanders and finished with his second multi-point game of the season, a performance that could be the spark he’s been looking for. And in net, Pyotr Kochetkov could get the call after seeing his perfect season end in Nashville on Tuesday, though the Canes could also turn back to Bussi.

Hurricanes Had Connor Bedard Sounding Defeated After Carolina Rout
Connor Bedard did not sugarcoat Chicagos latest setback after the Blackhawks were routed by Carolina, and the frustration came through in the way the captain assessed his teams play. After a 9-2 loss, Bedard pointed to the record and the defensive breakdowns as the kind of issues that keep piling up when a young club cannot find any traction, even as he noted the group still gets along well away from the rink.
For Carolina, it was another reminder of how punishing the Hurricanes can be when they get rolling, but the bigger takeaway was the tone coming from Chicagos franchise centerpiece. Bedard has 14 points in 12 games this season and only recently signed a five-year extension before being named captain, so the expectations around him are only growing as the Blackhawks try to turn the talent and camaraderie he sees behind the scenes into something sturdier on the ice. Logan Stankoven Is Giving The Hurricanes A Huge New Question
Logan Stankoven has wasted no time turning last springs playoff surge into something much bigger for the Hurricanes. After scoring 11 goals in 19 games during Carolinas championship run, he has opened the 2026-27 season with the kind of pace that makes his breakout look less like a hot streak and more like a new level, especially after finishing last year with 21 goals in 81 games.
For Carolina, the question is no longer whether Stankoven can help, but how far his scoring touch can carry him if it keeps showing up this consistently. He has already hit a few notable personal markers early in the season, and his start has put him on track for a career-best goal total, giving the Hurricanes another offensive layer to sort through as the year unfolds. Taylor Hall Explains The Setback That Delayed His Hurricanes Return
Taylor Halls road back to the Hurricanes lineup took a detour just when it looked like he was ready to rejoin the group. After missing time with his original injury, he was expected to be back after about two weeks away, only for a new setback to slow the process and push his return deeper into the calendar.
Hall eventually got back in on Nov. 5, but the extra delay only added to the challenge of finding his rhythm again. Hall and coach Rod BrindAmour both pointed to the difficulty of regaining game speed after an injury layoff, a reminder that getting cleared to play and feeling like yourself again are two different things.
