Flames Veteran Nazem Kadri Signals Major Shift With Trade Decision

With the Flames struggling and Nazem Kadri open to a potential move, trade talks are starting to heat up around the veteran center.

Nazem Kadri’s time in Calgary might be winding down.

According to multiple reports, the veteran center has let the Flames know he’s open to a trade. That doesn’t mean he’s demanding a move - far from it - but it does signal a willingness to consider new opportunities as Calgary navigates what’s shaping up to be a transitional season.

Kadri, now 35 and in the middle of his seven-year contract signed as a UFA in 2022, is one of several Flames players reportedly drawing interest around the league. Others include Blake Coleman, Ryan Lomberg, MacKenzie Weegar, and recent acquisition Zach Whitecloud. But it’s Kadri’s name that’s generating the most buzz, and for good reason.

He’s a proven commodity - a Stanley Cup champion, a seven-time 20-goal scorer, and a player with a reputation for showing up in big moments. Through 52 games this season, Kadri has tallied nine goals and 35 points.

Not eye-popping numbers, but solid production for a center who brings more than just stats to the table. He’s a tone-setter, a competitor, and a guy who can elevate a line with his edge and experience.

The challenge, of course, is the contract. Kadri carries a $7 million cap hit, which isn’t easy to fit midseason - especially for contenders tight against the ceiling.

But Calgary does have one more salary retention slot available for the 2025-26 season, which could help facilitate a deal if they choose to use it. Whether that ends up being for Kadri or someone like Coleman remains to be seen, but the flexibility is there.

As for potential landing spots, a few teams have reportedly shown interest in Kadri in the past - including the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche, and Minnesota Wild. All four could make sense depending on their current roster needs and cap situations. Kadri’s playoff pedigree and ability to play in all situations make him an appealing target, especially in a market where top-six centers are in short supply.

The Flames, sitting 30th in the NHL with a 21-25-6 record through 52 games, appear poised to be sellers as the trade deadline approaches. It’s been a tough season, and with the team clearly looking toward the future, moving a veteran like Kadri could be part of a broader reset.

Originally drafted seventh overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2009, Kadri has carved out a strong career across stints with Toronto, Colorado, and now Calgary. In 1,037 career games, he’s amassed 316 goals and 745 points - plus another 19 goals and 44 points in 52 playoff appearances. He’s been through the battles, and there’s no question he could help a playoff team in need of depth, leadership, and a little bite down the middle.

Whether a deal materializes in the coming weeks will depend on the market, the cap math, and how aggressive teams are willing to be. But with Kadri open to the possibility, the door is officially cracked open - and that’s enough to get the rumor mill humming in Calgary and beyond.
