Flames Turnaround Suddenly Has Fans Rethinking Their Biggest Weakness

Despite a rocky start, the Calgary Flames have turned their season around by achieving the highest team save percentage in the NHL.

The Calgary Flames have gone from a team that couldn’t buy a stop to one sitting atop the NHL in a telling category.

After stumbling out of the gate with five straight losses, Calgary has steadied itself, and the biggest shift has come in net. According to a recent post from Sportsnet Stats, the Flames own the league’s best team save percentage since that 0-5-0 start.

Despite tonight's loss, #Flames own the NHL's best save percentage (.916) since beginning the season 0-5-0

That’s a sharp turn for a club that was getting buried early. In its first five games, Calgary gave up 27 goals, including a rough seven-goal outing against the Colorado Avalanche. The defensive questions were obvious, but the goaltending wasn’t giving the team much help either.

The last 11 games have looked very different. Calgary has gone 7-3-1 in that span, and the Flames have allowed 28 goals while getting key work from both Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley.

Cooley, in particular, made a strong impression during a four-start run in which he won every game and picked up NHL Second Star of the Week honours. Over that stretch, he turned aside 127 of 133 shots, which worked out to a .955 save percentage.

Wolf has also started to settle in after a tough opening stretch. In his most recent start, he stopped 27 of 29 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken.

None of that means the Flames are out of the woods. Their offence has still been up and down, and a hot stretch from the goalies doesn’t erase what happened in those first five games.

But the numbers in Calgary’s crease are hard to ignore. For a team that opened 0-5-0 and had major concerns in goal, leading the NHL in save percentage since that start is a major turnaround.

Flames Prospects Are Suddenly Giving Fans A New World Juniors Debate

A fresh World Juniors conversation has started around two Calgary Flames prospects, thanks to Daily Faceoffs projected United States roster for the 2027 IIHF tournament. Ethan Wyttenbach and Cullen Potter both surfaced in the early look, giving Flames fans another reason to track the pipeline as the organizations young talent begins to stack up on the international stage.

Wyttenbach, a 2025 fifth-round pick, has already turned heads with his NCAA scoring and a strong showing at the World Junior Summer Showcase, while Potter arrived in college with first-round expectations and has opened well at Michigan State after shoulder surgery ended his season. The added wrinkle is that Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale also serves as Team USAs head coach for the event, and with projections suggesting Calgary could have as many as six players at the World Juniors, the debate around who makes the cut is only getting louder. Flames Give Fans A New Way To Celebrate The Saddledome Finale

The Saddledome is getting one more nod in the Flames wardrobe. Calgary will unveil its Scotiabank Saddledome-inspired Hometown Remix uniforms in a home game against the Anaheim Ducks, a special edition look tied to the NHLs league-wide push to celebrate local team culture and the places that have shaped each franchises identity.

For Flames fans, it is another way to mark the building that has been home for so many big nights and familiar routines. Forward Matt Coronato liked what he saw from the new jerseys, and he said the group felt an extra jolt while wearing a different throwback look in a recent win, a reminder that these alternate sweaters can do more than change the aesthetic for one night. Flames Get A Real Chance To Build Momentum Back At Home

The Flames are back at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday night with a chance to settle into a rhythm at home, and the timing feels useful after a stretch where every point has carried extra weight. It will be the third meeting of the season with Anaheim, and Calgary will also unveil its Hometown Remix jerseys for the first time, adding a little extra energy to a matchup that already has some familiarity to it.

There is still plenty to sort through on both benches, with injuries thinning out the lineups and forcing both clubs to keep adjusting on the fly. Calgary is expected to turn to Dustin Wolf in goal, while Anaheim is projected to counter with Lukas Dostal, and the game will be carried on Sportsnet West and QR Calgary as the Flames try to turn a home date into something more meaningful.
