Flames Suddenly Have A Goalie Concern In Battle Of Alberta

Flames goaltender Devin Cooley exits mid-game due to injury, raising questions about the impact on his team's performance against the Oilers.

The Flames may have to navigate the rest of Wednesday night in Edmonton without Devin Cooley after the goalie exited following a first-period collision with Colton Dach.

Cooley started the game for Calgary and was making his fifth straight appearance. With 12 seconds left in the opening period, he was run into by Dach on a sequence that drew a goaltender interference minor from the officials. The contact sent Cooley’s right leg into the post awkwardly, and his left leg folded underneath him as he fell back into the net.

He stayed in to finish the period, but Dustin Wolf opened the second. According to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, who is on the road at Rogers Place, Cooley was not on the bench, where backup goaltenders are typically stationed, and travelling emergency backup Dustin Nickel was no longer in his usual spot in the press box.

Calgary later announced that Cooley, dealing with a lower body injury, was done for the night. The club also said forward Brennan Othmann, who has an upper body injury, would not return after he was hurt in a first-period fight with Edmonton’s Ty Emberson.

Cooley, 29, is in his second season with the Flames and third in the organization after joining the club as a free agent in the 2024 off-season. He has been one of the early stories of the 2026-27 NHL season, shaking off a rough Oct. 8 outing against Colorado, when he gave up seven goals, and rolling from there. Entering Wednesday’s game, he had won four straight and was coming off the league’s second-star recognition for the week.

Beyond the numbers, Cooley has also stood out as one of the more interesting voices around the team, often talking about topics like mathematics, philosophy and psychology in interviews.

As of the middle of the second period, the Flames were trailing the Oilers 2-0.

Flames Win Streak Suddenly Comes With A New Crease Concern

Calgarys recent run has given the club some much-needed momentum, but the mood shifted in a hurry during the game against Edmonton when Devin Cooley was forced out with a lower-body injury. The Flames goalie left after a collision with Oilers forward Colton Dach, then did not return after the first period, sending Dustin Wolf into the crease for the rest of the night.

It was a rough scene for a team trying to keep things steady, especially with Brennan Othmann also leaving because of an upper-body injury and not coming back. For a Flames group that has benefited from better form lately, the bigger concern now is how quickly it can get through a game that suddenly carried a lot more injury fallout than anyone in Calgary wanted to see. Flames Crease Suddenly Under Pressure After Devin Cooley Scare

The Flames' crease took a sudden hit late in the first period when Devin Cooley exited after a collision with Colton Dach, forcing Calgary to regroup on the fly. With the game still unfolding, the injury immediately shifted the focus from the score to the condition of a goaltender the team was counting on in a key moment.

Dustin Wolf came on for the second period, giving Calgary a quick adjustment in net while the bench also had to absorb another loss after Brennan Othmann was ruled out following a fight with Ty Emberson. For a team already trying to manage the pace of the night, the added uncertainty around two players left plenty to monitor going forward. [Read more 🡒]

Red Wings Face Bigger Simon Edvinsson Decision Than Fans Expected

Calgarys latest roster noise is a reminder that the trade market can tighten fast around any club trying to balance present needs with future planning. Craig Conroy said defenseman Zach Whitecloud wants to be part of the Flames long-term picture, though it would take a substantial offer to pry him away, while the organization continues to sort through the uncertainty that comes with injured goaltender Devin Cooley and winger Brennan Othmann.

Across the Pacific Division, the Red Wings are dealing with a different kind of pressure in Simon Edvinssons case. San Jose has already shown interest in the unsigned restricted free agent defenseman, which adds another layer to a situation Detroit cannot afford to treat casually. With the market beginning to form and other clubs watching closely, the question is less about whether Edvinsson has value than how long the Wings can keep control of the timeline. [Read more 🡒]
