Flames Stunned by Islanders After Intense Third-Period Rally

Flames fall to the Islanders in a close battle as Simon Holmstrom's standout performance and a former teammate's heroics make the difference at UBS Arena.

Flames Battle Hard, But Islanders Edge Out 3-2 Victory

In a thrilling Saturday night showdown at UBS Arena, the Calgary Flames put up a valiant fight against the New York Islanders but ultimately fell short, losing 3-2. Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman led the charge for Calgary with crucial third-period goals, while Dustin Wolf delivered nearly 40 minutes of stellar shutout hockey in relief.

The Islanders' Simon Holmstrom was the star of the night, scoring twice, including a decisive short-handed goal. Former Flame David Rittich was solid between the pipes for New York, turning aside 30 shots to secure the win.

Early in the contest, Yegor Sharangovich had a prime opportunity to put the Flames ahead, breaking free on a breakaway. However, his attempt was thwarted by a sharp glove save from Rittich.

The Islanders struck first, with Casey Cizikas pouncing on a loose puck in front of the net to give New York the lead. Holmstrom doubled the advantage with a goal off an odd-man rush, then added his second on a short-handed breakaway just before the first period ended.

The Flames made a goaltending change to start the second period, bringing in Dustin Wolf. Wolf was spectacular, making a series of impressive saves, including a split-second stop on rookie Matthew Schaefer and a crucial pad save on Mat Barzal.

Calgary's comeback efforts began in the third period. Backlund redirected an Olli Määttä one-timer to notch his 15th goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Coleman followed up with his team-leading 16th goal, showcasing his speed and skill by driving wide and chipping a shot over Rittich’s shoulder.

Wolf's performance in relief was commendable, stopping 17 shots and keeping the Flames within striking distance.

Defenseman Zach Whitecloud made his return to the lineup, providing a boost after recovering from an upper-body injury. Meanwhile, Määttä's assist marked a milestone, his 200th career NHL point, and his fourth in five games since joining the Flames.

The Flames showed resilience, but the Islanders' defense and timely scoring proved too much to overcome.
