Calgary Flames fans have a lot to keep an eye on this week at the World Junior Summer Showcase, and it starts with the sheer volume of talent the organization has sent into the mix.
A year from now, a few of these players could already be making their NHL debuts. For the moment, though, the showcase offers the clearest look yet at some of the most intriguing prospects the Flames have added over the past two drafts.
That kind of thing gets said every summer, but this feels different. There may not have been a Summer Showcase with this much Flames talent on display.
That alone says plenty about where the rebuild stands. It’s still a work in progress, but the direction is clear.
One of the biggest names to watch is Theo Stockselius, who will represent Sweden after signing an entry-level contract with Calgary in early May. The 2025 second-round pick will spend this season continuing his hockey journey in Sweden, which makes this week one of the rare chances for fans to see him up close.
The Flames’ presence is spread across the event in a way that guarantees at least one prospect will be in action in every game from now through Saturday. For Calgary fans itching for something local after three-and-a-half months without hockey, that should help scratch the puck-sized itch.
The group includes four first-round picks, two second-round selections and Wyttenbach, a fifth-round pick from last year who made a major statement by leading the NCAA in scoring in his first season at Quinnipiac. He already looks like he could be one of the steals of the 2025 NHL Draft.
Canada doesn’t open play until Wednesday against Sweden at 5 p.m. All games are available at hnlive.ca. The results themselves may not be the point, but the showcase still matters as a proving ground and a possible preview of what the rosters could look like at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Edmonton and Red Deer later this year.
