Flames Prospects Are Suddenly At The Center Of Canada Buzz

Three of the Calgary Flames' top draft picks are poised to make a significant impact on Canada's World Juniors lineup, according to early projections.

Three Calgary Flames prospects are in the mix for Canada’s projected World Juniors roster, according to Daily Faceoff’s latest projection.

On Wednesday, prospect analyst Steven Ellis released his most recent look at Canada’s national junior team, and it included forwards Cole Reschny and Chase Harrington, along with defenceman Carson Carels. If that projection holds, the Flames will have a strong presence when the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championships open on Boxing Day at Edmonton’s Rogers Place and Red Deer’s Centrium.

Reschny was Calgary’s first-round pick, 18th overall, in the 2025 NHL Draft. The centre first made his name with the Western League’s Victoria Royals before moving on to the University of North Dakota.

His resume with Canada already runs deep: Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Hlinka Gretzky Cup, Under-18 Worlds and the World Juniors. He also skated with last year’s bronze medal-winning Canadian junior team and is viewed as a serious candidate to wear the C this year.

Harrington came off the board in the second round, 36th overall, in June’s NHL Draft. The Spokane Chiefs winger brought a mix of skill and edge in his draft year, and he’s kept that same profile this season.

He’s grown into one of the WHL’s most complete - and entertaining - players, and his play has pushed him into the national team conversation. He also represented Canada at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge a couple of seasons ago.

Carels was Calgary’s first-round pick, sixth overall, in June’s draft. The Manitoba native was a standout with the WHL’s Prince George Cougars before heading to North Dakota as a freshman. He’s already worn Canada colours at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the Under-18 Worlds and the World Juniors, and he was teammates with Reschny on last year’s Canadian junior squad.

There are also a few other Flames prospects who could land on other national junior teams. Cullen Potter, Ethan Wyttenbach and Jack Hextall are possibilities for the United States, while Theo Stockselius could suit up for Sweden.

The 2027 World Juniors will run from Dec. 26, 2026 to Jan. 5, 2027 in Edmonton and Red Deer.

Flames Prospects Are Suddenly Giving Fans A New World Juniors Debate

A fresh World Juniors conversation has started around two Calgary Flames prospects, thanks to Daily Faceoffs projected United States roster for the 2027 IIHF tournament. Ethan Wyttenbach and Cullen Potter both surfaced in the early look, giving Flames fans another reason to track the pipeline as the organizations young talent begins to stack up on the international stage.

Wyttenbach, a 2025 fifth-round pick, has already turned heads with his NCAA scoring and a strong showing at the World Junior Summer Showcase, while Potter arrived in college with first-round expectations and has opened well at Michigan State after shoulder surgery ended his season. The added wrinkle is that Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale also serves as Team USAs head coach for the event, and with projections suggesting Calgary could have as many as six players at the World Juniors, the debate around who makes the cut is only getting louder. Flames Give Fans A New Way To Celebrate The Saddledome Finale

The Saddledome is getting one more nod in the Flames wardrobe. Calgary will unveil its Scotiabank Saddledome-inspired Hometown Remix uniforms in a home game against the Anaheim Ducks, a special edition look tied to the NHLs league-wide push to celebrate local team culture and the places that have shaped each franchises identity.

For Flames fans, it is another way to mark the building that has been home for so many big nights and familiar routines. Forward Matt Coronato liked what he saw from the new jerseys, and he said the group felt an extra jolt while wearing a different throwback look in a recent win, a reminder that these alternate sweaters can do more than change the aesthetic for one night. Flames Turnaround Suddenly Has Fans Rethinking Their Biggest Weakness

A month ago, the Flames looked like a team trying to survive its own crease. Five straight losses to open the 2026-27 season had already put the spotlight on goaltending, and the early questions around Calgary were less about style than whether the team had enough stability in net to stop the slide. Since then, Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley have helped flip that conversation, giving the club a much steadier backbone as it has climbed out of the hole.

The turnaround has been strong enough to make fans rethink what had seemed like the rosters biggest weakness. Calgarys recent run has been built on far better work from its goalies, and Cooleys stretch has drawn league notice during the winning streak. For a team that began with so much doubt hanging over the crease, the bigger question now is whether this is a short burst of form or the start of something more lasting. [Read more 🡒]
