In a season where the Calgary Flames' prospects have been turning heads, William Stromgren is making quite the splash. The Calgary Wranglers forward was named the American Hockey League's Player of the Week, showcasing his knack for stepping up when it counts.
Over the past week, Stromgren played a pivotal role in three consecutive victories for the Wranglers. While he didn't find the scoresheet in a 3-2 shootout win against Manitoba on Feb. 16, his presence was felt as he took the first shot in the shootout.
Stromgren truly shined over the weekend. In a thrilling 5-4 overtime win against Bakersfield, he tallied a goal and two assists, finishing with a plus-2 rating.
He followed that performance with a standout game in San Jose, scoring two goals and adding an assist in a 4-3 overtime victory, ending the night with a plus-4 rating. Across these games, he accumulated three goals, three assists, and a plus-6 rating.
Drafted in the second round by the Flames in 2021, Stromgren hails from Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. He made the leap to North America for the 2023-24 season and has been steadily improving.
After posting 27 points in his first season and 49 in his second, he's already notched 37 points in 45 games this season. Stromgren even got a taste of NHL action earlier this year, playing three games with the Flames.
As a left-shot winger, Stromgren is proving to be one of the Flames' most promising prospects. Ranked 16th in the FlamesNation prospect rankings last August, he's solidified a top-six role with the Wranglers.
Even on nights when he's not scoring, his impact on the ice is undeniable. Currently tied for 44th in the AHL in points, his trajectory is one to watch.
The Wranglers are set to face off against the San Jose Barracuda on Tuesday and Wednesday, and fans will be eager to see if Stromgren can continue his impressive run.
