Flames Opening Night Lineup Sparks An Immediate Saddledome Debate

As the Calgary Flames unveil their anticipated opening night lineup, questions arise about the strategic choices and promising young players in the mix.

The Calgary Flames are finally back, and their final opening night at the Scotiabank Saddledome arrives Thursday against the Seattle Kraken.

It’s the kind of night that carries extra weight even before the puck drops. The building is closing out its run, the season is starting, and the Flames are stepping into what should be an emotional home campaign. Expectations for team success are limited, but there will be no shortage of memories for the players and the crowd.

Ahead of the opener, the Flames’ lineup came into focus, and there wasn’t much mystery to it. Pat Steinberg revealed the group Calgary will roll out against Seattle, and it matches what has shown up through training camp and the preseason:

Gridin-Frost-Coronato

Honzek-Backlund-Farabee

Zary-Strome-Sharangovich

Tsyplakov-Pospisil-Klapka

Bahl-Nemec

Kuznetsov-Whitecloud

Middleton-Parekh

Wolf

Jonathan Huberdeau is unavailable because of injury, while Hunter Brzustewicz and Aydar Suniev are back in the American Hockey League, so these combinations line up with what the Flames have on hand.

The top nine and the blue line look pretty straightforward for Ryan Huska. That’s where the strongest case can be made for Calgary’s opening night setup. The fourth line, though, is where the debate starts.

Maxim Tsyplakov, Martin Pospisil and Adam Klapka are all dependable role players, but plenty of fans wanted Brennan Othmann in that mix after he earned his roster spot in camp. His preseason work against Seattle only added to that case: he had an assist and 23 penalty minutes in two games, and he also said he loved playing the role as a rat on the ice. At 23 years old, he’s the kind of player many believe deserves a chance.

Still, this looks like the best lineup Calgary can put together right now. And for a team giving meaningful opportunities to Matvei Gridin, Matt Coronato, Zayne Parekh, Samuel Honzek and Simon Nemec, any step forward from that group would matter a lot for the organization’s future.

Flames Prospects Are Already Hitting Early Milestones Fans Will Notice

The NHL season is underway, and so is the early watch on several Calgary Flames prospects scattered across the CHL and Europe. There has already been a little bit of everything in their opening stretch, from goals and assists in the Western Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League to leadership duties that hint at how the organization sees some of these young players developing.

Maceo Phillips and Chase Harrington have both given Flames fans reasons to pay attention, even before the calendar has really settled in. Phillips recently found the net in Medicine Hats win over Edmonton, while Harrington stepped into a bigger role with Spokane and made his presence felt quickly in his season debut, the kind of start that can shape an early season conversation around a prospect group. Oilers Already Face A Forward Shakeup Calgary Fans Will Notice

The Oilers are already sorting through an early forward shuffle, and it started with a preseason problem that showed up against Calgary. Zach Hyman is expected to miss about two weeks after an undisclosed injury, leaving Edmonton to juggle its top-six look before the regular season even settles in. The club is also without Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Matt Savoie, and with Savoie projected to be out for seven weeks, there is some immediate depth pressure up front.

Edmonton has already reacted by pushing Leon Draisaitl onto a line with Connor McDavid and Vasily Podkolzin, a grouping that changes the look of a lineup Flames fans have been tracking closely. There is also a longer-term wrinkle in net, with Frederik Andersen moved to long-term injured reserve as the Oilers wait for him to return sometime in December, another reminder that the early-season roster picture is still very much in motion. Wranglers Take A Familiar Flames Gamble On The Blue Line

The Calgary Wranglers have added a familiar name to their blue line as they look ahead to the 2026/27 season, bringing in veteran defenseman Derek Forbort on a professional tryout contract. Forbort is expected to give the AHL club some experienced depth on the back end, and his rsum includes NHL time that should make him a useful presence in camp and around the room.

For Flames followers, there is a recognizable thread here: Forbort has already had a brief stop in Calgary, and he arrives after spending last season with the Vancouver Canucks. Whether the tryout leads to something more permanent remains to be seen, but it is the sort of low-risk move that can quietly shape a minor-league roster before the season really gets going.
