Flames Momentum Vanished Fast Against A Colorado Team They Couldnt Contain

Despite a valiant effort and recent winning streak, the Flames couldn't withstand the Avalanche's offensive onslaught in a challenging game in Colorado.

The Calgary Flames ran into a buzz saw in Colorado on Saturday night, and the Avalanche made sure the game never really tilted back in Calgary’s favor.

After rolling to a 6-2 win over the Seattle Kraken on Friday, the Flames came into the second night of a back-to-back with some momentum. They had also won six of their previous eight games. None of that carried over in a 5-2 loss that started slipping away early and kept widening as Colorado kept finding answers.

Recently recalled goaltender Arsenii Sergeev got the start for Calgary, but he was under pressure right away against one of the league’s most dangerous offenses. Nathan MacKinnon put Colorado on the board at 14:13 of the first period, jumping on a loose puck in the high slot and ripping it upstairs to make it 1-0.

The Avalanche kept turning the screws in the second. On the power play at 2:37, MacKinnon moved the puck to former Flame Nazem Kadri, who set up Martin Necas with a sharp cross-seam pass. Necas buried the one-timer to push the lead to 2-0.

Colorado struck again a little more than three minutes later. Cale Makar danced around a Flames defender and slipped the puck to Artturi Lehkonen, who quickly snapped it past Sergeev for a 3-0 cushion.

The Avalanche weren’t done building. On a two-on-one, Gabriel Landeskog sent a pass across to Brock Nelson, who chipped the puck out of the air and into the net for a 4-0 advantage.

Calgary finally got one back before the second period ended. Mikael Backlund won a battle along the boards and worked the puck out to Joel Farabee, who kicked it to his stick and slid a shot past Mackenzie Blackwood to make it 4-1.

The Flames brought some life into the third period when Martin Pospisil cut the deficit to two. After a strong forecheck forced a turnover on Ryan Strome, Pospisil found the puck in front and finished to make it 4-2.

But Colorado answered almost immediately. Makar sent a shot toward the net and Lehkonen redirected it past Sergeev for his second goal of the night, restoring the Avalanche’s three-goal lead at 5-2.

Farabee kept his strong run going with another productive night. His goal gave him 12 points in his last seven games, a stretch that includes five goals and seven assists.

There were also a couple of familiar Calgary ties on Colorado’s scoresheet. Calgary-born defenceman Cale Makar finished with four assists, and Nazem Kadri added one against his former team.

Morgan Frost is now sitting one point shy of 200 career NHL points as he continues to carve out his place in the Flames lineup.

Flames Suddenly Have A Morgan Frost Decision They Didn't Expect

Morgan Frost has given the Flames something they did not necessarily expect to be weighing this early, and it comes at a time when Calgary is trying to sort out its bigger picture. After arriving with questions about how he would fit, Frost has started to look more like a player worth keeping around, which naturally changes the conversation for a front office that is always balancing immediate needs against longer-term value.

The recent uptick has also pushed the discussion beyond simple short-term production and into what the organization wants to do next with him. Calgary had reasons to listen before, but Frosts play has made the decision less straightforward, and the fact that contract talks are already part of the picture only adds to the intrigue as the Flames try to decide whether this is a move they still want to make. Flames Defensive Breakdowns Let Avalanche Take Over Early

The Flames were chasing from the start in Denver, and the early hole only got deeper as Colorado dictated the pace in a 5-2 loss. Calgary did manage to push back at times, but the Avalanche kept finding ways to answer, turning what might have been a manageable road test into a night where the visitors were forced to play catch-up almost immediately.

Arsenii Sergeev had plenty to deal with in goal as the Avalanche kept pressing and stretching the ice on Calgary. Even with the Flames trying to steady things and make a game of it, Colorado stayed in control long enough to put the result away and leave Calgary looking for a cleaner response after another defensive lapse. Flames Injury Trouble Is Creating A New Wranglers Problem

The Calgary Wranglers Halloween-night visit with the Laval Rocket had all the usual AHL chaos, with penalties, fights and a tight scoreline before Laval pulled away for a 2-1 win and a split of the two-game series. Alex Nylander provided Calgarys lone goal, but the bigger story for the Flames organization has been the ripple effect of injuries at the NHL level, which has already pushed Arsenii Sergeev and William Stromgren up to Calgary.

Connor Zarys latest setback only adds to the pressure on the system, leaving the Wranglers thinner while the Flames keep reaching for depth. Against Laval, the margin for error disappeared quickly, and Calgarys penalty trouble in the second period helped turn a manageable night into one that left the affiliate searching for answers as the roster churn continues.
