Zach Whitecloud’s name keeps surfacing in NHL trade chatter, and the Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be part of that conversation.
According to David Pagnotta on an episode of DFO Insider, the Maple Leafs have already had exploratory talks around the Calgary Flames defenceman. Whitecloud is under contract in Calgary through the 2027-28 NHL season, but Pagnotta said Toronto’s interest goes back further than that.
"The previous regime had a lot of interest in Zach Whitecloud; I believe there've been at least exploratory inquiries; I believe they're one of the teams that would look at him," Pagnotta said.
Pagnotta has tied Whitecloud to Toronto before, too. On the October 7 edition of Daily Faceoff Live, he said Whitecloud fits the profile of the kind of defenseman the Maple Leafs are trying to add. He made a similar point again on the October 6 episode of Leafs Morning Take, while also cautioning that Toronto would not be alone in the hunt.
The Leafs, though, are only one piece of the picture. Another team has also reportedly shown interest in Whitecloud. On a Daily Faceoff episode last week, Anthony Di Marco said Flyers sources told him Whitecloud is the kind of blueliner Philadelphia is looking for.
"Speaking with Flyers sources last week, Zach Whitecloud’s name was brought up as an archetype for the type of defenseman the team would be looking to add"
With Whitecloud continuing to draw attention, Elliotte Friedman said it will be tough for the Flames to hold onto him because someone will eventually make an offer.

Flames Lose Promising Young Forward At The Worst Time
Samuel Honzeks emergence has been one of the more encouraging developments for Calgary early on, which is why his latest setback lands so awkwardly for a lineup still trying to sort out its depth. The Flames announced the young forward has a lower-body injury and has been ruled week to week, after he had already missed recent games.
With Honzek out, Calgary has turned to Matvei Gridin to fill his place on the third line, a reminder of how quickly opportunity can shift for a club leaning on its younger players. For a Flames team hoping to build some stability, losing a promising forward in the middle of that process is hardly ideal, and now the next question is how long they will have to manage without him. Flames Rebuild Takes A Tough Hit With Sam Honzek Sidelined
The Calgary Flames rebuild absorbed another small but meaningful setback when Sam Honzek was ruled out on a week-to-week basis with a lower-body injury. The first-round pick from the 2023 NHL Draft has been part of the organizations longer-term plan, which makes any absence for the young forward worth watching closely, especially at a time when the club is trying to sort out its next core.
Honzek had already been absent for the Flames most recent game against Anaheim and remained off the ice for the practices that followed before the update came down. For a team leaning on development as much as immediate results, losing one of its key prospects is the kind of interruption that can slow both evaluation and momentum, even if the hope is that this stays short of something more serious. Senators Injury Trouble Could Change The Trade Market Fast
An early-season injury can change a teams thinking in a hurry, and Ottawa is already feeling that pressure after winger Tim Eklund went down. The Senators now have to sort through how to replace a top-six forward, with the conversation quickly turning toward whether a trade makes sense even though the market does not offer many clean solutions.
For Calgary, this is the kind of development worth watching closely because Ottawas need could ripple beyond its own roster. Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson and the rest of the forward group are expected to absorb more responsibility for now, but if the Senators decide internal answers are not enough, the trade board could get busy fast.
