Flames May Be Near A Brutal Decision On Connor Zary

Connor Zarys future with the Calgary Flames appears bleak as the team contemplates a buyout after failed trade attempts.

The Calgary Flames’ Connor Zary situation keeps moving toward an ending, and Elliotte Friedman says the next step could be a buyout.

On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman said the Flames may have to make a major decision on the 25-year-old if they can’t find a trade partner. Zary cleared waivers, and Friedman pointed to his $3.775 million cap hit as a big reason why no team stepped in.

“That one of the teams that has kinda dipped their toes on Zary a bit are the aforementioned Rangers. Even if they wanted to do that, I just don’t think they could make it fit.”

Friedman added that the New York Rangers were among the teams that showed some interest, but they couldn’t make the money work. He also said he heard Calgary gave Zary permission last season to speak with other teams, though nothing came of it.

The Flames apparently spent the summer trying to move him, with reports that they were seeking a second-round pick in return. Friedman confirmed there was interest, but no club was willing to pay that price. He also said Calgary made one more push the day before waivers, putting Zary’s name into the GM groupchat to see if anyone would bite.

“I also heard that the day before Calgary put him (Zary) on waivers, they put his name on the GM groupchat, and it didn’t go anywhere.”

That lack of traction matters because the Flames are also not interested in using their final retention spot on him in a deal. Friedman said any trade would likely require Calgary to take money back.

If a trade never comes together, a buyout is on the table. Because Zary is 25, Friedman said he would be eligible for a one-third buyout. If the Flames go that route at season’s end, it would leave them with a $600,000 cap hit for the next two seasons.

There’s also the possibility of Zary terminating his contract, though Friedman noted it would be hard for a player to walk away from that kind of money.

However it plays out, the signs point in the same direction: Zary’s time in Calgary looks close to over. Whether the Flames trade him or buy him out, his run with the team appears headed for a split after this season.

Flames Prospect Watch Took A Frustrating Turn In London

Londons latest outing turned into a frustrating one for Calgary Flames prospect watchers, as the Knights came up short in a 4-3 shootout loss to Erie. Aleksei Medvedev did his part with several key saves, and London got useful contributions from players such as Eloan Le Gallic and Marcus Nordmark, but the night never quite settled into the kind of clean, controlled performance that would have made for an easier watch.

The bigger issue was the way the game slipped away late, with the Knights unable to finish after building a lead and then seeing Erie tie it up in the closing minutes of regulation. Special teams and first-period scoring remained problem areas, and Ryan Brown was unavailable again because of an upper-body injury, leaving his status still uncertain as the Knights move on from a result that felt like a missed opportunity. Flames Penalty Kill Faces Its First Real Test Against Anaheim

The early returns on Calgarys penalty kill have been hard to miss. After allowing a goal in the opening game of the season, the Flames have settled in quickly, stringing together a long run of successful stops and putting themselves among the leagues better short-handed teams. Martin Pospisil has been a notable part of that effort, taking on meaningful minutes while stressing the groups aggressive, prepared approach when the puck drops and the pressure starts.

Now comes a more revealing checkpoint against Anaheim, the kind of game that can tell you whether the numbers are just a hot start or a real strength. Ryan Huska has shown faith in the units structure and execution, even with Sam Honzek unavailable for the matchup, and the Flames will get another chance to see how their short-handed identity holds up when it matters a little more. Flames Suddenly Face Another Sam Honzek Concern

Sam Honzeks status has become a familiar concern for the Flames just as the schedule starts to settle in. The winger will miss the upcoming game against the Anaheim Ducks with an injury that is still being evaluated, and head coach Ryan Huska said there is no update yet on when Honzek might be available again. It is a frustrating development for a young player who has already dealt with injuries since being drafted in 2023.

Honzek had been part of the lineup in Calgarys first four regular-season games and had also been getting work on the penalty kill, which made his absence more noticeable. The Flames are now waiting for clarity on both the injury itself and how long it might keep him out, adding another layer of uncertainty around a player the club has been trying to integrate into the mix.
