Flames Lose Promising Young Forward At The Worst Time

In the midst of the NHL season, teams like the Flames and Penguins navigate the impact of key injuries on their roster, with promising prospects like Honzek striving to overcome recurring setbacks.

The Calgary Flames will be without Samuel Honzek for a while after the club announced the forward has a lower-body injury and is now considered week-to-week.

Honzek had already been out since Calgary’s Thursday loss to the Colorado Avalanche and sat out Saturday’s loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Before the injury, he had been working on the Flames’ third line on the left side with Martin Pospisil and Ryan Strome. Calgary has filled that spot with Matvei Gridin.

The setback adds another tough chapter to what has already been a difficult stretch for Honzek, 21, one of the organization’s top prospects. Last November, he had surgery for an upper-body injury and missed the rest of the season.

He played in only 18 games and produced four points. He still does not have his first point of 2026-27, though head coach Ryan Huska had been giving him steady minutes before this latest issue slowed him down again.

Earlier this year, Scott Wheeler of The Athletic ranked Honzek as the No. 7 prospect in the Flames’ system and described him as someone who “should become a well-rounded 30-40 point forward” in the NHL.

There were also injury updates from Pittsburgh, where Dan Muse said defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk is still day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review was among those told that van Riemsdyk missed practice and is not expected to travel for the opening stretch of the Penguins’ four-game road trip.

Pittsburgh also placed him on injured reserve, opening up a roster spot. The veteran defenseman has been an important penalty-killing piece for the Penguins so far this season, leading the team in short-handed ice time per game.

Muse also said forward Justin Brazeau will stay behind while the Penguins head out on that road trip as he continues recovering from a lower-body injury. Brazeau has not yet made his 2026-27 debut after suffering the injury during the preseason process.

He did skate on his own today, but a return is not considered imminent. Brazeau was a bright spot for Pittsburgh last season, setting career highs with 17 goals and 34 points and making good on the club’s two-year, $1.5MM AAV free-agent commitment.

Flames Rebuild Takes A Tough Hit With Sam Honzek Sidelined

The Calgary Flames rebuild absorbed another small but meaningful setback when Sam Honzek was ruled out on a week-to-week basis with a lower-body injury. The first-round pick from the 2023 NHL Draft has been part of the organizations longer-term plan, which makes any absence for the young forward worth watching closely, especially at a time when the club is trying to sort out its next core.

Honzek had already been absent for the Flames most recent game against Anaheim and remained off the ice for the practices that followed before the update came down. For a team leaning on development as much as immediate results, losing one of its key prospects is the kind of interruption that can slow both evaluation and momentum, even if the hope is that this stays short of something more serious. Flames May Have A Tough Whitecloud Decision Coming

The buzz around Zach Whitecloud is starting to build, and for the Flames it comes with a familiar kind of pressure. NHL insiders David Pagnotta and Anthony Di Marco have both tied Toronto and Philadelphia to the Calgary defenseman, a sign that Whiteclouds profile is resonating well beyond the Saddledome. Pagnotta said the Maple Leafs had even done some exploratory work on him under their previous regime, while Di Marco noted that Flyers sources see Whitecloud as the sort of defenseman they want to bring in.

For Calgary, the question is no longer just whether Whitecloud fits, but whether the market around him gets strong enough to make keeping him difficult. Elliotte Friedman has already suggested the Flames could have a hard time retaining him if other teams keep showing interest, which puts management in a delicate spot as it weighs value, fit, and the risk of letting a useful blue-liner walk into a crowded market. Senators Injury Trouble Could Change The Trade Market Fast

An early-season injury can change a teams thinking in a hurry, and Ottawa is already feeling that pressure after winger Tim Eklund went down. The Senators now have to sort through how to replace a top-six forward, with the conversation quickly turning toward whether a trade makes sense even though the market does not offer many clean solutions.

For Calgary, this is the kind of development worth watching closely because Ottawas need could ripple beyond its own roster. Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson and the rest of the forward group are expected to absorb more responsibility for now, but if the Senators decide internal answers are not enough, the trade board could get busy fast.
