As the Calgary Flames gear up for their final showdown of the season against the Vancouver Canucks, they've been hit with some tough injury news. Defenseman Joel Hanley, a key piece of their blue line, will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to an upper body injury sustained during Thursday's matchup with the Anaheim Ducks.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska confirmed Hanley’s status after the morning skate, stating, “Joel is out tonight. Joel’s going to be out for a while. So unfortunately, we likely won’t see him again.”
Hanley was a warrior on the ice against Anaheim, credited with four shot blocks in the narrow 3-2 overtime loss. It seems one of those blocks has led to this unfortunate turn, keeping him out of the lineup for the Flames’ last 10 games.
The 34-year-old has been a versatile asset since joining the Flames as a waiver claim late in the 2023-24 season. Known for his adaptability, Hanley seamlessly slotted into various defensive pairings, often stepping up as a reliable partner at a moment’s notice.
This season, he primarily anchored the third pairing, teaming up with a rotating cast including MacKenzie Weegar, Zayne Parekh, Hunter Brzustewicz, and Brayden Pachal. Over 68 games, Hanley tallied seven assists, wrapping up the first year of his two-year deal with a $1.75 million cap hit.
With Hanley out, and Yan Kuznetsov still nursing injuries, the Flames are left with six healthy defensemen: Kevin Bahl, Zach Whitecloud, Olli Maatta, Brzustewicz, Pachal, and Parekh.
Hanley’s absence adds to the Flames’ growing injury list, joining Sam Honzek, Jake Bean, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Connor Zary. While Honzek, Bean, Huberdeau, and Hanley are confirmed out for the season, Zary and Kuznetsov remain day-to-day, leaving the Flames to navigate the final stretch with a patchwork lineup.
