Flames Fans Are Furious Over What Toronto Just Did In Its Opener

In a surprising turn, Calgary Flames fans are up in arms over claims that the Toronto Maple Leafs have imitated their iconic Saddledome goal horn, igniting a heated debate across social media.

Calgary Flames fans had plenty to chew on Tuesday night, and it had nothing to do with their own team taking the ice.

As the Flames prepare to open a season that doubles as a farewell tour for the Saddledome after 43 years, one of the details they’ll soon leave behind is the building’s goal horn. That sound, along with the arena’s saddle-shaped roof, the high media box, the notorious “dome foam beers,” and the way the horn rolls through the old rink, is part of what fans expect to miss most.

But when the Toronto Maple Leafs opened their 2026-27 season Tuesday night and William Nylander scored their first goal, some Flames fans heard something that sounded awfully familiar.

For whatever reason, fans thought the Toronto goal horn sounded eerily similar to Calgary’s.

The Leafs have not announced any official change to their goal horn this season. In fact, during the preseason, they used a different horn entirely, one that didn’t draw the same kind of comparison to Calgary’s.

Still, the reaction online was immediate. Flames fans piled on, convinced Toronto had borrowed a staple they’ve had for more than 20 years. And once people played the Calgary horn and the new Toronto version back-to-back, the similarities were hard to ignore.

That was enough to set off a wave of complaints and jokes on social media, with some Flames supporters accusing the Leafs of lifting their horn during a season when Calgary is saying goodbye to the Saddledome.

Even some Maple Leafs fans were left scratching their heads.

“Did they record the Flames goal horn on someone’s phone and just hit play?

Still pissed that the @MapleLeafs decided to steal the Flames goal horn.

I believe the punishment should be sending William Nylander back to his birth city and reuniting with his brother.

“Do we have the Flames goal horn?” said one confused Leafs fan.

“So the Leafs simply stole the Flames’ goal horn? Lmao?” said another fan.

“Wow, so the Leafs stole the Flames’ goal horn that they have used for decades this year?” said another Flames fan.

“So did the Leafs think that making their goal horn sound like the Flames’ would help?” Pondered another hockey fan.

Why do we have the Calgary Flames goal horn?

There was also some chatter online that Toronto may have been using the horn because its usual one wasn’t working properly, although nothing has been confirmed on that front.

If the Maple Leafs really are sticking with this sound, the debate now shifts to whether Flames fans should take it as theft or flattery.

Flames Opening Night Disaster Raises One Brutal Early Question

The Calgary Flames did not get the kind of start anyone around the Saddledome wanted to see, opening the 2026-27 regular season with a 6-1 loss to the Seattle Kraken on home ice. Seattle set the tone early and never really let go, while the Flames spent most of the night chasing the game after a rough first period put them in an immediate hole.

What made the performance harder to digest was how many of the problems were of Calgarys own making. Penalties and defensive mistakes kept feeding the Krakens momentum, and the lone Flames goal came only late in the third period after the outcome was long since tilted. For a team trying to establish a better early-season footing, the question now is how quickly this group can clean up the details before one bad opener starts feeling like a pattern. [Read more 🡒]

Flames May Have A Familiar Blue Line Option Back In Play

A familiar name has surfaced around Calgarys system, and it comes with the kind of low-risk depth look teams lean on when the blue line needs a little more certainty. The Wranglers brought in veteran defenseman Derek Forbort on a professional tryout, giving the organization a chance to see where his game is after an injury-plagued year in Vancouver and, from his side, a path toward proving he still belongs in an NHL conversation.

For Calgary, there is at least some built-in familiarity if this turns into more than a camp stop, since Forbort once wore a Flames sweater in 2019-20 and already knows the market and the expectations that come with it. His arrival also fits the broader shuffle around the league, where teams are continually balancing injuries and reinforcements, and it leaves open the question of whether the veteran can turn this latest opportunity into a real contract chance. Canucks Just Sent A Top Prospect Into A Situation Flames Fans Know Well

Braeden Cootes is heading into the kind of proving ground Flames fans know well, with the Vancouver Canucks assigning their 2025 first-round pick to Abbotsford to begin his pro season. The move sends the young forward into the AHL right away, just as the affiliate gets ready for its opener and finalizes an opening roster that will give a better look at how the club plans to handle one of its most closely watched prospects.

For Vancouver, the decision is clearly about patience and development, not a fast track to the NHL. Canucks GM Ryan Johnson has made it clear there is no set timeline for a promotion, which puts the emphasis on steady growth in Abbotsford rather than immediate pressure in Vancouver. How Cootes settles in there, and how quickly he can turn a strong start into momentum, will be one of the early stories to watch once the season opens. [Read more 🡒]
