Flames Face An Early Test As Familiar Rivalry Opens At Home

The Calgary Flames find themselves at a crucial juncture as they face the Minnesota Wild, featuring familiar face Blake Coleman, in what promises to be a pivotal encounter at the Saddledome tonight.

The Calgary Flames get back to work Thursday night with a different feel around the Saddledome after a big win and a few days to reset. They’re back in the middle of a homestand, and the opponent brings a familiar face with him: Blake Coleman returns to Calgary for the first time with the Minnesota Wild.

Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. MT on Sportsnet One and QR Calgary.

The Flames are coming in at 2-6-0 with four points, but the mood around the club has shifted a bit after taking two of their last three. Sunday’s win was helped by Devin Cooley, who stopped 34 shots against Carolina and then delivered a postgame explanation that wandered into the “conscious and unconscious mind” - though, as noted, he apparently meant subconscious instead of unconscious.

Still, the bigger picture for Calgary is that the team has looked more organized lately. The Flames defended well, limited second chances, and cashed in on key opportunities when they mattered.

They’ll try to build on that against a Minnesota team that arrives at 6-2-2 with 14 points and has already proven it can keep rolling even when the lineup isn’t full strength.

Calgary’s projected forward group has Aydar Suniev with Morgan Frost and Yegor Sharangovich on the top line, followed by Joel Farabee, Ben Jones and Matt Coronato. Matvei Gridin is slated to skate with Martin Pospisil and Ryan Strome, while Brennan Othmann, Jonathan Castagna and Adam Klapka round out the bottom six. On the blue line, the projected pairs are Kevin Bahl with Simon Nemec, Jake Middleton with Zach Whitecloud, and Yan Kuznetsov with Zayne Parekh.

Cooley is expected to start in goal, with Dustin Wolf backing him up. The healthy scratches appear to be Joel Hanley and Maxim Tsyplakov.

Mikael Backlund is not expected to play after leaving the Carolina game with an upper-body injury, which opens the door for Ben Jones to make his Flames debut. Calgary had an optional morning skate, so the full picture could still shift once warm-ups begin.

For Minnesota, the projected top line has Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy. Blake Coleman is listed on the second line with Ryan Hartman and Bobby Brink, followed by Yakov Trenin, Danila Yurov and Maxim Shabanov, then Nico Sturm, Michael McCarron and Tyler Pitlick. The Wild’s projected defense pairs are Quinn Hughes and Jonas Brodin, Daemon Hunt and Zach Bogosian, and Matt Kiersted with David Spacek.

Calvin Pickard is projected to start in net, with Jesper Wallstedt behind him. Minnesota’s healthy extras are listed as Carson Lambos and Rieger Lorenz.

The Wild came out of Edmonton on Tuesday with an overtime loss, but they played a strong game against Connor McDavid’s line and, for stretches, controlled the play. Even so, they left without the result. The reason Minnesota has stayed near the top of the standings is depth; injuries have thinned the roster, but the group has still found ways to keep winning.

The injury list is significant for both sides. Calgary is without Jonathan Huberdeau, Sam Honzek and Mikael Backlund. Minnesota is missing Brock Faber, Filip Gustavsson, Nick Foligno, Marcus Foligno, Jared Spurgeon and Olli Maatta.

This is the first meeting between the Flames and Wild this season. They’ll see each other again on Nov. 19 in Calgary and Mar. 19 in Minnesota.

Zach Whitecloud Is Giving The Flames A Fascinating Deadline Decision

With the trade deadline getting closer, Zach Whitecloud has become one of the more intriguing names tied to the Flames blue line. David Pagnotta pointed to Whiteclouds favorable contract and dependable game as the kind of profile that can draw real attention, especially for a defenseman who can help a playoff push without creating long-term cap trouble.

The catch for Calgary is that interest like that tends to come with a steep asking price, which could force a difficult decision on whether to cash in now or keep a useful piece in place. The Flames may have other players generating interest as well, but Whiteclouds market is the one that could shape how aggressive Calgary gets in the days leading up to the deadline. [Read more 🡒]

Flames Get An Encouraging Injury Sign Before Red Wings Game

The morning skate before a meeting with the Red Wings offered a little more clarity on Calgarys injury picture, and there was at least one encouraging sign for a lineup that has had to shuffle pieces around. Mikael Backlund and Jonathan Huberdeau both took part in limited fashion while wearing no-contact jerseys, giving the Flames a chance to see two key forwards back on the ice, even if only in a controlled setting.

Ryan Huska indicated Backlund is the closer of the two to returning, while Huberdeau continues to work his way back slowly after hip surgery and does not have a set timeline. Sam Honzek remains out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, leaving Calgary to manage its depth carefully as it heads into another game with several moving parts up front. [Read more 🡒]

Flames Prospect Sparks Frustration In Controversial OHL Win

Cohen Bidgood had a night that got attention for more than the box score, scoring twice as the London Knights outlasted the Sarnia Sting 6-4 in a game that carried plenty of edge. The Calgary Flames prospect was part of a stretch that left Sarnia frustrated, and the Stings coach was left to sort through both the challenge of containing Bidgood and a defensive effort that gave up too much.

The flashpoint came on the tying goal, a sequence that left the Sting weighing whether to challenge before deciding against it. Bidgood drove the play to the net in a manner that quickly turned controversial, and the puck still found its way across the line as London seized the momentum. The night also included another London wrinkle, with defenceman Jonathan Kapageridis beginning a three-game suspension after a major penalty in a previous game. [Read more 🡒]
