Flames Desperately Need Jonathan Huberdeau As Return Question Looms

Calgary Flames fans eagerly await Jonathan Huberdeau's crucial return as he inches closer to rejoining the lineup following hip surgery.

Jonathan Huberdeau is getting closer to a return for the Calgary Flames, and the latest update suggests the wait may not be much longer.

The 33-year-old forward has been out since undergoing hip resurfacing surgery last March, a procedure that ended his 2025-26 season early. There had been some optimism that he might be ready for the beginning of the 2026-27 campaign, but that hope faded around September. Flames general manager Craig Conroy then added more uncertainty when he said Huberdeau had suffered a setback around that same time.

Even so, the picture now looks more encouraging. Huberdeau has been skating regularly, though he’s still doing so in a non-contact jersey. That could be the next thing to change, according to QR 770’s Pat Steinberg, who offered a loose window for a comeback during an appearance on Barn Burner.

“He’s still working his way back, but he’s going to be back in the next number of weeks,” Steinberg said in an appearance on Barn Burner.

That doesn’t lock in a specific date, but it does point toward a possible return before the Christmas break.

For Calgary, the timing matters. Huberdeau has taken plenty of criticism during his time with the Flames, but there’s no question he’d give the lineup a boost if he can find anything close to the offensive pace he showed in 2024-25. In that season, he finished second among Flames skaters with 28 goals and 62 points.

The big question now is how he’ll look after such a significant surgery. The Flames could use the help. They’ve gone 7-3-0 over their last 10 games, but they still rank 29th in the NHL in scoring, averaging just 2.53 goals per game.

Former Flames Pick Is Forcing A New Conversation In Regina

A familiar name from the Flames pipeline is drawing attention again in Regina, where 19-year-old defenseman Hamilton has been handed a bigger role as the Pats 84th captain. Under new head coach David Bell, he has been working to sharpen his defensive game while also bringing more grit to his shifts, a combination that has helped him stand out as a young leader on a team looking for direction.

Hamiltons rise comes with a different kind of uncertainty attached to it. He was once viewed as a possible NHL draft pick, but his path now feels less linear, with his next move still very much open as he weighs what comes after junior hockey. For a player who has already been asked to wear the C, the conversation around him is shifting from where he was expected to go to what kind of career he can still build from here. [Read more 🡒]

Flames Goalie Picture Just Shifted Again As One Battle Resets

The Flames goaltending depth chart shifted again Thursday, with Arsenii Sergeev sent back to the AHLs Calgary Wranglers and Devin Cooley activated off the injury reserve list. It was Cooleys first day eligible to come off IR, bringing him back into the mix after he had been sidelined since Oct. 28.

Sergeevs brief NHL stint included two games and a stretch of practices with the big club before he headed back to the Wranglers. For Calgary, the move resets a competition that has been in flux, with Cooley now available again just as the team sorts out its next turn in goal. [Read more 🡒]

Flames Let A Winnable Seattle Game Slip Away Late

For much of the night in Seattle, Calgary had the kind of game it needed to finish off on the road. Yegor Sharangovich put the Flames ahead in the first period, and the early marker also gave Morgan Frost a milestone moment in his career as the visitors carried a slim lead into the later stages at Climate Pledge Arena.

The margin, though, never felt safe, and Seattle kept pressing until it found the equalizer and pushed the game beyond regulation. Dustin Wolf made 27 saves in a losing effort, but the Flames left with only a point after the Kraken completed the comeback in overtime, a result that stings even more in a game Calgary had within reach for so long.
