Devin Cooley’s night against the Edmonton Oilers ended far sooner than the Calgary Flames expected, and it wasn’t because of what happened on the scoreboard.
Cooley allowed one goal on nine shots in the first period, but when the Flames came out for the second, it was Dustin Wolf who took over in net. No injury was announced during the intermission, but Cooley appeared to be dealing with something after a collision with Oilers forward Colton Dach late in the opening frame. He stayed down for a few seconds, got back up on his own, and finished the rest of the period before leaving the game.
It’s a tough blow for Calgary and for Cooley, who has been in the middle of the strongest stretch of his career. The 29-year-old had won each of his previous four starts, putting up a 1.50 GAA and a .954 SV% over that run. Against Edmonton, he was making his fifth straight start as he continued to hold the crease.
Wolf, meanwhile, got the call after Cooley exited, and the timing could work out for him in a different way. The 25-year-old has struggled badly to open the 2026-27 season, carrying a 4.85 GAA and a .834 SV% through five starts.
The Flames also had another setback in the first period. Brennan Othmann dropped the gloves early with Oilers defenceman Ty Emberson and was later ruled out of the game. The 23-year-old entered the night still looking for his first point of the season through five games.

Flames Win Streak Suddenly Comes With A New Crease Concern
Calgarys recent run has given the club some much-needed momentum, but the mood shifted in a hurry during the game against Edmonton when Devin Cooley was forced out with a lower-body injury. The Flames goalie left after a collision with Oilers forward Colton Dach, then did not return after the first period, sending Dustin Wolf into the crease for the rest of the night.
It was a rough scene for a team trying to keep things steady, especially with Brennan Othmann also leaving because of an upper-body injury and not coming back. For a Flames group that has benefited from better form lately, the bigger concern now is how quickly it can get through a game that suddenly carried a lot more injury fallout than anyone in Calgary wanted to see. Flames Suddenly Have A Goalie Concern In Battle Of Alberta
The Battle of Alberta took an abrupt turn in the first period when Devin Cooley was forced out after a collision with Edmonton forward Colton Dach, leaving the Flames to regroup in a game that already carried plenty of edge. Calgary also had to absorb another injury blow with forward Brennan Othmann unable to continue, turning a heated rivalry night into an early test of depth and composure.
Dustin Wolf stepped in to begin the second period as the Flames tried to steady themselves without their backup netminder. Calgary later said Cooley has a lower body injury and will not return, a development that adds an immediate layer of concern to a position group the club can ill afford to lose in a game of this intensity. Red Wings Face Bigger Simon Edvinsson Decision Than Fans Expected
Calgarys latest roster noise is a reminder that the trade market can tighten fast around any club trying to balance present needs with future planning. Craig Conroy said defenseman Zach Whitecloud wants to be part of the Flames long-term picture, though it would take a substantial offer to pry him away, while the organization continues to sort through the uncertainty that comes with injured goaltender Devin Cooley and winger Brennan Othmann.
Across the Pacific Division, the Red Wings are dealing with a different kind of pressure in Simon Edvinssons case. San Jose has already shown interest in the unsigned restricted free agent defenseman, which adds another layer to a situation Detroit cannot afford to treat casually. With the market beginning to form and other clubs watching closely, the question is less about whether Edvinsson has value than how long the Wings can keep control of the timeline. [Read more 🡒]
