The early weeks of the season have already started to put pressure on a few NHL teams, and some familiar names are suddenly in the middle of the chatter.
In Philadelphia, the Flyers’ ugly 0-5-2 start to the 2026-27 season has opened the door to bigger questions about the roster. The organization is not expected to touch its young core, but Travis Konecny has emerged as a player to watch if the losses keep piling up.
Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco reported that frustration is building inside the club over Konecny’s overall influence. Per the sources he cited, the 29-year-old can disappear when he isn’t scoring or annoying opponents, and his puck management - especially turnovers and shaky decisions - is drawing heat.
Konecny is in the second season of an eight-year, $70 million extension and has three assists in five games this year. If the Flyers stay near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, they could look into whether he’d waive his no-movement clause.
With Rick Tocchet reportedly safe in his job, a trade may be the more realistic way for Philadelphia to shake things up.
Toronto, meanwhile, is still tinkering. The Maple Leafs sit at 3-2-1 through six games, and general manager John Chayka may not be done adding to the back end.
NHL insider David Pagnotta said the club has had exploratory talks involving Calgary Flames defenceman Zach Whitecloud. Pagnotta also noted that Toronto’s previous management group had shown strong interest in the right-shot defender, leaving the door open for him to remain on the radar.
Whitecloud has not posted a point in five games this season for a Calgary team that has struggled, and he arrived with the Flames in January 2026 in the return for Rasmus Andersson. Toronto is drawn to the physical presence he brings to the blue line, and the Montreal Canadiens have also been loosely linked in the discussion.
Chicago may soon get the jolt it needs from its biggest offensive piece. The Blackhawks have only one win in their first six games and are sitting last in the Central Division, but Connor Bedard is close to returning.
He has been out since injuring himself during an offseason training session, leaving Chicago without its top scorer to open the year. Elliotte Friedman reported that head coach Jeff Blashill said Bedard was expected back Tuesday.
Bedard said he’s eager to get back alongside his teammates after missing camp and preseason, saying, “I’m pumped. It’s crazy, it’s only been six games.
When you miss camp and you miss preseason and everything, it feels like a lot longer. Just to be back with the guys and get to do what I love, it’s exciting.”
Carolina also took a hit, and this one lands on the leadership group. Jordan Staal is expected to miss a significant stretch after suffering a calf tear in warm-up.
Rod Brind’Amour called it a freak injury and put the timeline at one to two months. The Hurricanes will be without a veteran center whose game is built on defense, penalty killing and faceoffs, and Brind’Amour said the team will likely recall a forward to help replace him.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi is also available to handle middle duties.

Flames Finally Got The Response Fans Needed After That Start
The Flames finally got the kind of response they had been searching for on the road in Anaheim, where a shaky start gave way to a 4-2 win over the Ducks and a break from an early-season skid. Calgary jumped out first, then watched the game tilt on penalties and Ducks goals before settling in and finding its footing in the second and third periods.
Aydar Suniev helped swing the night back in Calgarys favor, Martin Pospisil delivered a crucial late goal, and Yegor Sharangovich added the empty-netter to finish it off. Dustin Wolf also steadied things with several important saves, and for a club that has been looking for signs of resilience, this was a much-needed one even with the penalty issues still hanging around. Flames Fans Will Want To See This Ducks Injury Update
Anaheims latest roster move carries a familiar sting for a player who has battled his share of injury trouble over the years. Forward Ryan Poehling has been placed on injured reserve after getting hurt in a game against the Flames, and the Ducks have turned to Roger McQueen, who was recalled from the San Diego Gulls, to fill the opening.
For Calgary, the update is a reminder of how one sequence can change the feel of a game long after it ends. Poehlings absence stretches out a stretch of weeks for Anaheim and leaves the Ducks adjusting up front, while the play that set everything in motion is the kind of moment Flames fans will remember whenever these two teams meet again. Flames Face A Tough Blue Line Call As Trade Buzz Builds
The blue-line market is already starting to stir, and Calgary finds itself in the middle of it as other teams begin circling for help. One name drawing attention is Zach Whitecloud, the kind of veteran defenseman contenders tend to monitor closely when they want stability and a little postseason pedigree, especially with his Stanley Cup background still carrying weight around the league.
For the Flames, the conversation is complicated by where Whitecloud sits in his Calgary tenure and how quickly trade talk can turn into real pressure. He was acquired in the Rasmus Andersson trade and is still pointless in five games, which does not change his value as much as it frames the scrutiny around him as the rumor mill picks up and rival clubs keep searching for answers on the back end.
