The Calgary Flames kept one of their quieter depth pieces in the fold on a busy day around the NHL, re-signing restricted free agent forward William Strömgren to a one-year, two-way deal worth $850,000 at the NHL level.
The move came after general manager Craig Conroy and the Flames had already added four depth players through free agency. Instead of chasing the flashier headlines, Calgary kept working the edges of the roster and made sure Strömgren stays in the organization.
Strömgren, a native of Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, was a second-round pick by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft, taken one round after Calgary selected Matt Coronato. He came out of the MODO Hockey system and spent the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons moving between Swedish clubs, including Rögle BK and Brynas IF, splitting time between each team’s junior and pro levels before signing his entry-level contract with the Flames at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Since then, he has spent most of his time in the AHL and has put together a steady run of production. As a rookie in 2023-24, he scored seven goals and totaled 27 points.
He followed that with 14 goals and 49 points in 2024-25, then posted 11 goals and 47 points in 2025-26. Strömgren also got his first taste of the NHL in January, appearing in three games with Calgary on the fourth line and finishing without a point.
The left-shot winger has carved out a reputation as a dependable two-way forward in the AHL, even if he’s not the kind of player who turns heads with big hits or highlight-reel moves. His game is built more on skating, positioning and clean fundamentals, and he’s shown he can handle top-six or top-nine minutes at that level. If he can take another step and establish himself as a true top-six or top-nine AHL forward, he could earn a longer NHL look.
For now, the Flames have kept a player with plenty of tools in the system and will see whether he can put them together. Calgary still has two RFAs left to sign: blueliner Simon Nemec and forward Brennan Othmann.

Flames Fans Have A Simon Nemec Concern They Can't Ignore
For a Flames front office that has spent plenty of time looking ahead, the latest bit of business centers on Simon Nemec and where his next deal might land. Craig Conroy is in talks with Nemecs representatives about a contract extension, and the expectation is that a response will come later this week or early next, keeping Calgarys attention on a young defenseman whose future value matters well beyond the present moment.
The timing is what gives this one extra weight for Flames fans. Calgary has been trying to map out its roster and cap picture with an eye toward the next wave, and Nemec fits squarely into that conversation as a player whose contract status could shape how aggressive the team can be elsewhere. Until the response comes back, the only certainty is that this is one of those front-office threads worth watching closely. [Read more 🡒]
Ducks Are Taking No Chances With A Cornerstone Of Their Future
The Ducks have made it clear they are not looking to lose one of their young centers as the offseason moves along, and that stance has ripple effects for teams around the league, including Calgary. Anaheim has been careful with its free-agent business while keeping room available for a potential offer-sheet match, a signal of how highly it values Leo Carlsson as part of its future core.
For the Flames, it is another reminder of how difficult it can be to pry away young talent from a team determined to hold the line. Calgary already explored the Ducks center depth this summer and came up short, and the market around Anaheims younger players has only gotten tighter. Elsewhere, Georgii Merkulov remains a name to watch as he weighs overseas interest while still hoping to land an NHL deal after producing well in the AHL. [Read more 🡒]
Former Flame David Rittich Just Forced Back An Old Goalie Debate
David Rittichs latest stop is another reminder of how quickly the goaltending conversation can change around a veteran who has been around the league. The former Flame has now landed with the New Jersey Devils on a one-year, one-way deal worth $1 million, adding another chapter to a career that has already taken him through Toronto, Nashville, Winnipeg, Los Angeles and the Islanders after his time in Calgary.
For the Flames, Rittich still fits into that familiar category of goalie who can make a fan base revisit old what-ifs, especially when a former starter keeps finding NHL work in a league that never seems to have enough experienced netminders. His new contract gives New Jersey another seasoned option, and it also keeps the focus on where he ends up spending the season, whether that is with the Devils or with their AHL affiliate in Utica.
