The anticipation around Calgary Flames prospect Ethan Wyttenbach's journey reached a new peak as he was named one of the 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. This announcement from the NCAA on Wednesday came as no surprise to those following the season closely.
Wyttenbach, the NCAA's leading scorer, is joined by a talented group that includes Trey Augustine, Max Plante, Eric Pohlkamp, Felix Trudeau, James Hagens, Charlie Stramel, Hayden Stavroff, T.J. Hughes, and Gavin McKenna.
Wyttenbach's impressive performance this season makes him a strong contender for the award. The 19-year-old, who was a fifth-round pick by the Flames in the 2025 draft, dazzled with 24 goals and 58 points for Quinnipiac. His 58 points not only led the NCAA but also outpaced the second-place scorer, McKenna, by seven points.
This season has been a whirlwind for Wyttenbach, hailing from Rosen, New York. Rumors are swirling about a potential move to the professional ranks, though a return to Quinnipiac for his sophomore year remains on the table. His stellar play has also earned him finalist spots for both ECAC Hockey's Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, accolades he seems poised to claim.
While Wyttenbach stands as the sole Flames prospect in the Hobey Baker race, the team has seen success elsewhere. Cole Reschny secured the title of NCHC’s Rookie of the Year, and although Cullen Potter had a promising season, it was cut short by a shoulder injury.
Wyttenbach's path to the Hobey Baker is compelling, even considering Quinnipiac's relatively modest conference standing. McKenna, projected as a top pick in the upcoming draft, poses a significant challenge.
Interestingly, McKenna shares the ice at Penn State with Luke Misa, another Flames prospect from the 2024 draft. Meanwhile, Pohlkamp teams up with Eric Jamieson at Denver, and Hughes plays alongside Henry Mews at Michigan.
Despite Quinnipiac's early exit from their conference tournament against Clarkson, their season is far from over. An invitation to the national tournament seems imminent, with the competition set to kick off later this month. As for the Hobey Baker Award, the winner will be announced on April 10 during the Frozen Four, adding another layer of excitement to this already thrilling season.
