As the NHL trade deadline passes, teams often turn their attention to bolstering their rosters through their AHL affiliates or by signing college free agents. This approach has proven successful in the past, with players like Tyler Bozak, Chris Tanev, Torey Krug, and Chris Kunitz making significant impacts after joining the league this way. As collegiate seasons wrap up, we typically see a flurry of these signings, and this year promises to be no different.
The Calgary Flames are eyeing a promising talent in Tyson Gross from St. Cloud State University. A right-shot center and a native of Calgary, Gross seems like a natural fit for the Flames.
Meet Tyson Gross
Gross has deep roots in Calgary, having developed his skills with various local hockey organizations. He made his mark with the Drumheller Dragons in the AJHL before crossing the border to compete in the USHL.
After two productive seasons there, Gross took his talents to St. Cloud State University in the NCAA.
Each year, Gross has elevated his game, and this season he doubled his goal tally, netting 18 in 36 games. With 41 points, he ranks 15th in NCAA scoring.
As the captain of St. Cloud, Gross is known for his two-way play, strong work ethic, and competitive nature-all qualities that align with the Flames' organizational values.
Flames Leading the Charge to Sign Gross
According to sources, the Calgary Flames are leading the race to sign Gross to an entry-level contract. Standing at 6’3” and weighing 194 lbs, the 23-year-old right-shot center fills a critical need for the Flames. The organization offers Gross a promising path to NHL action, possibly sooner than he might find elsewhere.
Given their current roster dynamics, the Flames are poised to be strong contenders in the college free agent market in the coming years. For Gross, signing with Calgary would be a homecoming, fulfilling a dream of playing for the team he supported growing up. Adding a personal touch to the story, Gross’s father, Kevin Gross, serves as the Vice President of Partnerships and Sales for the Flames.
The Flames have a history of successfully signing college free agent centers. Two years ago, they brought in Sam Morton on an entry-level deal, and last year, they signed local talent Carter King. Both players are currently with the Calgary Wranglers, and Morton has already tasted NHL action, appearing in four games over the past two seasons.
As the Flames look to the future, signing Tyson Gross could be another strategic move in their ongoing efforts to build a competitive and dynamic roster.
