The Calgary Flames took to the ice in the Garden State on Thursday night and skated away with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the New Jersey Devils. This road win was packed with standout performances and milestone moments that Flames fans won’t soon forget.
John Beecher was the star of the night, delivering his finest game since donning the Flames jersey. Beecher netted two goals, showcasing his potential and making his presence felt on both ends of the ice.
Kevin Bahl chipped in with his fourth goal of the season, Yegor Sharangovich added his 14th, and captain Mikael Backlund reached a career milestone with his 600th NHL point. In goal, Dustin Wolf was a wall, turning aside 27 shots to help seal the victory.
Calgary wasted no time lighting the lamp. Just two shots into the game, Beecher found the back of the net at 5:04 in the first period.
Charging into the zone on a partial odd-man rush, he slipped a shot past former Flames goalie Jakob Markstrom, marking his first goal as a Flame in his 31st game. Matvei Gridin earned his fifth assist on the play.
The Flames doubled their lead later in the first. Bahl kept the puck alive at the blue line, and after a quick cycle to Olli Maatta, he unleashed a booming one-timer at 14:07, making it 2-0. Adam Klapka also picked up an assist on the play.
The Devils responded before the period closed. A turnover in front of Calgary’s net gave Maxim Tsyplakov a chance, and his shot deflected through traffic to cut the lead to 2-1 at 16:24.
Late in the first, Joel Hanley’s high-sticking penalty gave New Jersey an extended power play that stretched into the second period. But Calgary struck first when play resumed. Just 54 seconds in, Beecher forced a turnover, drove the net, and followed up his own rebound to restore the Flames’ two-goal cushion at 3-1.
New Jersey didn’t back down, answering on the same power play. Luke Hughes’ shot created chaos in front, allowing Simon Nemec to push the puck past Wolf at 1:36, making it a one-goal game once more.
The Flames responded with precision before the period ended. Ryan Strome orchestrated a two-on-one, setting up Sharangovich, who deftly shifted to his backhand and lifted the puck over Markstrom for a 4-2 lead heading into the third.
Calgary’s captain, Mikael Backlund, added to the lead with a milestone moment early in the final frame. At 4:10, he snapped a shot past Markstrom, giving the Flames a 5-2 advantage and marking his 600th career point.
The Devils made one last push. Jesper Bratt found Jack Hughes during a line change, and Hughes fired a wrist shot past Wolf to narrow the gap to 5-3. Luke Hughes added a late power-play goal, but the Flames held firm to clinch the road victory.
