Wake Forest Just Got A Tough ACC Stretch Into Sharper Focus

Wake Forest is gearing up for a rare late-night showdown against California, as both teams aim to solidify their standings in the ACC race.

Wake Forest now knows exactly when its trip to Berkeley will happen.

The ACC announced Week 7 kickoff times earlier this week, and the Demon Deacons will take on California on Saturday, October 17. The game is set for 10:30 p.m. ET at California Memorial Stadium, with ESPN or ESPN2 carrying the broadcast.

It will be only the second meeting between the programs. Their lone previous matchup came in 2024, when Cal entered the ACC and beat Wake Forest 46-36 behind future Heisman Trophy winner and No.

1 NFL Draft pick Fernando Mendoza. Wake Forest will get a chance to even the series when it heads west.

Cal came into the season with plenty of buzz, and not without reason. A lot of people viewed the Golden Bears as a possible dark-horse ACC contender, especially with star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele back for his sophomore year in Berkeley. Expectations around the program have been higher than they’ve been in a long time.

The results, though, have been uneven. Cal opened with a 45-24 loss at home to UCLA, then bounced back with wins over Syracuse and Wagner.

Since then, the Golden Bears have dropped two straight. Clemson gave the Cal offense trouble in one loss, and the next week UNLV had its way with the Golden Bears’ defense.

Now Cal heads into its home game against Wake Forest looking to stop the slide.

In the latest ACC Power Rankings from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons On SI editorial staff, Cal sits at No. 12. Wake Forest is No. 2, though that could shift before this weekend’s game against NC State.

Before the Cal trip, Wake Forest has to deal with another road test. The Demon Deacons travel to Raleigh to face NC State on Saturday, October 10, with kickoff at 12 p.m. ET on The CW.

Cal Heads Into Virginia Tech With Too Many Crucial Injury Doubts

Cals trip to Virginia Tech comes with the kind of injury report that can reshape a game plan before the teams even take the field. Running back Carter Vargas and defensive lineman Nate Burrell have already been ruled out, trimming depth on both sides of the ball and putting more strain on a roster that needs to hold up on the road.

The more pressing uncertainty sits with the players still listed as questionable, including quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, running back Adam Mohammed, wide receiver Chase Hendricks and safety Kingston Lopa. Add in defensive players Kamar Mothudi and Aiden Manutai, and Cal is left waiting on several key answers that could affect everything from its offensive rhythm to how aggressively it can defend in the secondary. Cal Gets A Big Homecoming Test With Plenty Riding On It

Alumni and Parents Weekend brings a little extra weight to Berkeley this year, with Cal celebrating its 103rd Homecoming while preparing to host Virginia Tech. The matchup adds another layer to an already busy scene around campus, and it comes with a football series that has stayed close through the first two meetings, giving Saturday a little more edge than a typical fall date on the calendar.

The Bears also are sorting through some of their own internal storylines as the game approaches, including a new face helping steer the offense in Pat McCann and a growing role for junior Aaron Hampton, whose rise has come with both a scholarship and more snaps. For a Cal team trying to turn a festive weekend into something more meaningful on the field, the homecoming stage offers no shortage of reasons to watch closely. [Read more 🡒]

Cal Walk-On Aaron Hampton Brings A Mentality This Roster Needed

Aaron Hampton has become one of the steadier constants around Cals defense, the kind of walk-on inside linebacker whose value goes beyond the depth chart. A native of Anchorage, he arrived with a background that already set him apart, having helped lead his high school to a state title and earned Gatorade Athlete of the Year honors back home. At a program that has seen plenty of turnover, Hamptons presence has stood out because of the way he carries himself and the work ethic he brought with him from Alaska.

What makes Hampton especially noteworthy is how firmly he has stayed attached to Cal through all the change around him. Even as the roster has been reshaped and the program has dealt with a coaching change, he has remained in place, giving the Bears a player whose loyalty and habits have drawn attention inside the building. For a team looking to establish a tougher mentality, that kind of commitment can matter just as much as anything a player does on Saturdays. [Read more 🡒]
