California men’s basketball is bringing Matt Bradley back into the fold in a bigger way.
Head coach Mark Madsen announced Bradley has been hired as director of player development for the upcoming 2026-27 season, giving the Bears a familiar voice and a former standout player in a new staff role.
“Our players have great respect for Matt as a leader with an outstanding basketball IQ,” Madsen said. “His work ethic and love of the game shows in all that he does, and he has also been a winner as a player. He will play a key role in the growth of our Bears.”
Bradley, a San Bernardino native, was already part of the program last season as a graduate assistant, continuing his return to Haas Pavilion after a decorated playing career at Cal. He spent three seasons with the Bears, earned All-Pac-12 Second Team honors twice and finished No. 10 all-time at Cal in career 3-pointers made with 156. He also left Berkeley with 1,289 points before transferring to San Diego State for his senior year.
Since his college days, Bradley has built a resume that stretches beyond the court. He worked with K-12 youth as a teacher, mentor and sports trainer, and he also played overseas in Germany before stepping into his graduate assistant role with Cal for 2025-26.
“I’m excited to be back at Cal and to work with student-athletes who were once in my shoes,” Bradley said. “I’m dedicated to helping prepare our players to compete and win under Coach Madsen, while working closely with the staff to support the program in every way possible.”
The move comes after a strong 2025-26 season for Cal, one that produced 22 wins - the program’s most since 2016 - and its first postseason win since 2014. That team also had eight games with at least 90 points and placed five players in the top 100 of national statistical categories.
The hire also fits the program’s “California Through and Through” message, which Cal describes as more than a slogan. The school says it reflects identity, pride and direction, with the program leaning into its California roots, its history and its future.
