BERKELEY - Cal wasted no time showing off its new-look offense in the season opener at Haas Pavilion, rolling past Adams State 115-86 behind a blistering shooting night and a deep scoring spread.
The Golden Bears were sharp from the start and never let up for long. They hit 63 percent of their shots in the first half, piled up 66 points before the break and finished at 60.6 percent from the floor overall, their best offensive outing since 2020. The 115 points were the most Cal has scored since 2007, and the Bears had 12 different players score in a game that featured five in double figures.
Michael Cooper made the biggest splash in his debut as a Bear. The sophomore scored a game-high 24 points and buried a career-best six 3-pointers.
Sammie Yeanay added 21 points, Nojus Indrusaitis scored 20, and both players set career highs in the process. Indrusaitis and Cooper were two of eight Cal players making their first official appearance for the program.
Transfers Jake Wilkins and Jordan Ross also reached double figures with 12 points apiece.
Cal’s shooting burst helped create separation early. The Bears used a 9-0 run fueled by threes from Indrusaitis and Cooper, with a three-point play from Ross mixed in, to stretch the margin to 31-14.
Later in the half, Cal flashed its athleticism with back-to-back dunks - first Indrusaitis on a pass from Cooper, then Yeanay after a TT Carr steal. The Bears led 66-37 at halftime and, after a brief lull early in the second half, finished strong with more highlight-reel finishes on the way to the win.
Adams State put up plenty of offense of its own, with six players scoring in double figures. Emilek Jallow led the Grizzlies with 19 points.
Adams State knocked down 13 3-pointers and shot 44.3 percent from the field, while Cal went 11-for-? from deep and controlled the glass 40-34.
Both teams finished with 25 assists.
Yeanay’s night stood out well beyond the scoring column. He also grabbed a career-high six rebounds and swiped five steals.
Indrusaitis’ 20 points were a personal best, and Cooper’s six made 3s were a career high. Jorell Clark, Jovani Ruff and Gabriel Sularski each scored their first career collegiate points in their debuts, while 12 of the 14 Bears who played scored at least two points.
Cal also finished with 11 dunks, including three each from Yeanay and Wilkins.
The win was the 50th of Mark Madsen’s Cal tenure.
Cal returns to Haas Pavilion on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup with Radford before heading to Lake Tahoe to face Houston on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in the Caesars Lake Tahoe Classic.

Lulu Twidale Gave Cal Fans The Exact Start They Wanted
Lulu Twidale gave Cal exactly the kind of opening-night spark the Bears were looking for, scoring 26 points and burying six 3-pointers in an 80-58 win over Washington State. She kept Cal in control whenever the Cougars tried to make a run, and Shannon Dowell added 17 points off the bench to help the Bears settle into the season with a comfortable home-court result.
Washington State got 20 points from Eleanora Villa, but the Cougars never found much rhythm against a Cal defense that held them to 27.8 percent shooting in the first half. For the Bears, the bigger takeaway was how quickly Twidale asserted herself as the tone-setter, giving Cal a reliable answer every time the game threatened to tighten. [Read more 🡒]
Cals New-Look Offense Just Gave Bears Fans Real Hope
The first look at Cals revamped offense came fast and loud at Haas Pavilion, where the Bears rolled past Adams State in their season opener and did it with a half that immediately got people talking. Cal shot 60.6% from the field, knocked down 11 of 23 from deep and got major scoring help from Michael Cooper, Sammie Yeanay and Nojus Indrusaitis as the points piled up in a 115-86 win.
What made the night even more encouraging for the Bears was the way the attack flowed without center Lee Dort in the lineup. Cal still found plenty of production and pace, and now the question shifts to whether that same balance travels into the next test against Radford, where the early optimism will get a little more scrutiny. Cal Has One Standout Fans Cant Ignore Right Now
Among the most encouraging developments for Cal this season has been the rise of Kingston Lopa, whose play on the back end has given the defense a true difference-maker. The safety put together another strong showing against North Carolina State, earning an 83.7 Pro Football Focus grade, and he has been one of the Bears most reliable defenders all year while leading the team with five interceptions.
Lopas impact stands out even more because the offense has not had the same kind of consistency, with quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele still sitting at a 71.7 season grade despite a modest step forward in passer rating from a year ago. For Cal, that makes Lopa the player fans can point to when looking for a clear bright spot, and it also raises the question of just how high his production can climb if the Bears keep leaning on him in coverage.
