Cal has entered the mix for one of the biggest names to emerge from the latest eligibility ruling.
Pete Nakos of Rivals/On3 reported that the Bears are among the schools pursuing linebacker Trent Hendrick, the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year at James Madison. Hendrick was granted a fifth year of eligibility and has entered the transfer portal.
Hendrick put together a huge 2025 season for a James Madison team that finished 12-2 and made the College Football Playoff. He piled up 106 tackles, added seven tackles for loss and three sacks, broke up three passes, logged two quarterback hurries and forced two fumbles.
Nakos also reported that two other programs viewed as frontrunners for Hendrick are both on Cal’s 2026 schedule. One of them is UCLA, which opens the season against Cal on Saturday night, September 5 in Berkeley.
The Bruins appear to be the team to beat in the chase. Several reports have pointed that way, and On3 quoted Hendrick as saying he “loves UCLA.” That connection only gets stronger when you consider that new UCLA head coach Bob Chesney spent the past two seasons as James Madison’s head coach.
For Cal, the interest makes sense. Inside linebacker has been a strength under Justin Wilcox, but that spot looks less settled heading into Tosh Lupoi’s first season. Tristan Jernigan and AJ Tuitele are currently the likely starters for 2026, though both are young and neither was a starter at his previous school last year - Tuitele at USC and Jernigan at Texas A&M.
Landing Hendrick would instantly give the Bears an experienced piece at a key spot, though how fast he could absorb Cal’s defensive system this late in the preseason is an open question.
A decision should come quickly. If Hendrick plays a fifth college season, it has to be in 2026 under the new NCAA rule allowing players five years to play five seasons.
Hendrick, a Richmond, Virginia native, would be making a cross-country move if he picked Cal or UCLA. Still, that kind of transfer is hardly unusual in the portal era.
The eligibility shift only became possible this week after a court ruling created a temporary injunction for players who have played four college seasons in four years, are not tied to a pro team and did not use a redshirt year. Before that, players whose fourth season came under the old rule could not return for a fifth.
Hendrick has been a major contributor for James Madison throughout his four seasons there. He leaves with 209 career tackles, 19 tackles for loss, six sacks, five passes defensed and three forced fumbles.
