When you're a defensive back from the University of California, it carries weight. Cal's reputation as "DBU" has been cemented over the years, with a steady stream of talent making their way to the NFL.
Since the 2020 draft, nine Cal defensive backs have been picked, all still active in the league. This impressive group includes Jaylinn Hawkins and Craig Woodson, who started as safeties in the 2025 Super Bowl for the Patriots.
Hawkins recently moved to Baltimore, while Camryn Bynum secured a deal with Indianapolis. Elijah Hicks re-signed with Chicago, marking another chapter with the Bears.
Meanwhile, Nohl Williams and Ashtyn Davis, third-round picks, continue to make their mark, with Davis now with the Dolphins. Marcus Harris, Patrick McMorris, and Daniel Scott are also keeping the Cal legacy alive in the NFL.
At Cal's Pro Day on Thursday, held at the iconic California Memorial Stadium, the latest crop of defensive backs-Brent Austin, Hezekiah Masses, and Dru Polidore Jr.-showcased their skills in front of scouts from every NFL team. Each player left the field feeling optimistic.
Brent Austin aimed to demonstrate his on-tape abilities in person, while Dru Polidore Jr. highlighted his smooth DB work and athleticism. Hezekiah Masses acknowledged room for improvement but was satisfied with his performance.
These players, having transferred to Cal in 2025, were drawn by the school's reputation for producing top-tier defensive backs. Austin noted the high expectations set by previous players, making Cal an attractive destination. Masses was also lured by Cal's academic prestige and the opportunity to be part of "DBU."
In their 2025 season, all three had standout performances. Masses tied for first nationally with 18 pass breakups and was eighth with five interceptions, earning second-team All-American honors.
Austin, a third-team All-ACC selection, made a game-saving play against North Carolina, forcing and recovering a fumble to secure a win. Polidore, stepping up as a starting safety, finished third on the team with 62 tackles.
The Pro Day also featured other talents from Cal's 2025 roster, including DL T.J. Bollers, WR/RET Jacob De Jesus, RB LJ Johnson, DL Aidan Keanaaina, OL Jordan Spasojevic-Moko, and DE Chris Victor. Additionally, former players DB Lu-Magia Hearns and RB Jaydn Ott, who last played in 2024, participated in the event.
As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, scheduled for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh, these Cal players are poised to continue the legacy of "DBU," ready to make their mark on the professional stage.
