Cal Recruiting Just Took Another Hit Fans Can't Ignore

A top tight end prospect shifts his allegiance from Cal to Mississippi, shaking up the recruiting landscape for the class of 2027.

Cal’s 2027 recruiting class took another hit when four-star tight end Rahzario Edwards switched his pledge from the Bears to Mississippi.

Edwards, a 6-foot-6, 215-pound standout at Grant Union High School in Sacramento, had committed to Cal in late May. At the time, he picked the Bears over a long list of heavy hitters that included Mississippi, Alabama, Oregon, Miami, Michigan, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Washington, USC and Florida, among others.

Now he’s headed elsewhere. Edwards announced the flip to Mississippi, and the move comes one day after Cal’s 41-7 loss to Wake Forest. It is not known whether that result played any role in his decision.

Edwards is regarded as the fifth-best tight end prospect in the class by Rivals and ESPN. As a junior at Grant Union in 2025, he caught 23 passes for 634 yards and five touchdowns.

Cal also had another recruit making headlines. Four-star quarterback Dane Weber, who committed to the Bears in late May, visited UCLA over the weekend, according to Adam Gorney of Rivals/On3.

Gorney quoted Weber as saying "just a visit for now." That "for now" part may raise red flags.

Weber had picked Cal over UCLA and Cincinnati when he made his decision in May. He attends Chaparral High School in Temecula, California, and threw 41 touchdown passes as a junior last season.

None of these pledges are final until recruits sign a financial agreement, formerly known as a letter of intent. The early signing period runs December 2-4.

Even after losing Edwards, Cal’s 2027 class remains ranked 26th nationally by Rivals Industry Composite.

There was at least one bit of good news for the Bears on the recruiting front. Four-star wide receiver Charles Davis, who originally committed to Cal in April, opened up his recruitment in September, signaling some uncertainty. But last week he recommitted to Cal and said he plans to enroll in January.

Cal, now 3-4 and 2-2 in the ACC, heads to Dallas on Saturday morning to face No. 23 SMU, which is 5-1 and 3-1 in the ACC.

Cal Heads Into A Brutal SMU Test With One Huge Concern

Cal heads to Dallas for the first of three straight road games, and the timing is hardly ideal. No. 24 SMU has been a problem for ACC opponents since arriving in the league, with Rhett Lashlees team pairing a sturdy defense with an offense that has given the Mustangs a quick rise in conference play. The trip also comes with an added layer of urgency for Cal, which is trying to regroup after a significant loss and get its footing before the road stretch really starts to stack up.

A big part of the challenge is navigating SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings, who has already established himself as the focal point of the Mustangs attack and a player who can make a defense pay in a hurry. Cal also has its own questions to sort through at quarterback, which makes this a difficult matchup even before factoring in SMUs recent special-teams change at placekicker. For a Bears team looking for stability, this is the kind of test that can expose every weak spot. [Read more 🡒]

Cal Fans Are Running Out Of Patience With This Season

The frustration around this season only got louder after a rough home date with a ranked opponent, with the Golden Bears sitting at 3-4 and still searching for anything that feels stable on offense. Tight end Mason Mini made it clear the locker room felt the disappointment from the latest setback, and coach Tosh Lupoi pointed to the second-half effort as a small positive in a game that otherwise left a lot to sort through.

What stands out now is how little certainty Cal has heading into the next matchup with SMU. Lupoi said the quarterback picture is still being evaluated, leaving the Bears in the awkward spot of trying to reset after another uneven outing while also deciding who gives them the best chance to get back on track. Cal Faces Another Brutal Road Test At The Worst Possible Time

Cal is heading into a stretch that already feels unforgiving, and the timing does not help. After a loss to Wake Forest dropped the Golden Bears to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, they now face a pair of road games that will both kick off at 9 a.m. Pacific time, starting Saturday at SMU on The CW.

The compressed turnaround and early start times add another layer to a trip that already demands plenty from a team still trying to steady itself in conference play. Cals next visit, set for Oct. 31 at North Carolina State on the ACC Network, comes with the same early-window challenge, making this a tricky road stretch for a team looking to regroup after last weekends setback.
