The Bears scored a significant win today, securing a commitment from Sutter Union's standout DE/Edge, Troy Bowens, during an unofficial visit to Cal.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 255 pounds, Bowens is a consensus four-star recruit and ranked as the nation's 12th best Edge by Rivals.
Bowens shared, “Tosh started recruiting me back when he was at Oregon as the defensive coordinator and offered me there. Oregon was my second offer over a year ago, and Tosh has been my favorite coach since. Everything about him is great, and his move to head coach at Cal opened my eyes.”
Bowens has visited Cal multiple times, drawn by the program's atmosphere and the coaching staff, many of whom Tosh brought from Oregon. The proximity of Cal, just an hour and a half away, adds to the appeal.
“I really like Cal. The players are awesome, and the coaches have shown a lot of love.
I visited today and got a firsthand look at their practice. I've got an official visit lined up for May 28-31.”
Bowens, an All-State defensive end, has been a frequent presence on campus this year, attending events like Premier Day. His relationship with the Cal staff has blossomed, culminating in today’s commitment.
On the field, Bowens was a force, racking up 106 tackles, 13 sacks, 31 QB pressures, 3 forced fumbles, and 3 passes defended, leading Sutter to the state finals.
A versatile athlete, Bowens has experience playing receiver and tight end, and even punts. He also excels in basketball and track and field, competing in discus and shot put.
The Bears edged out competition from Oregon, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan, Stanford, UCLA, and others for Bowens’ commitment. He joins a promising 2027 recruiting class, alongside fellow edge Giovanni Hodge, Arizona LB Gunnar Perry, Blake Gunter, and IMG kicker Zach Brien.
