A year ago, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was more of a footnote than a headline in The Athletic’s quarterback rankings. Cal hadn’t even settled on him as the starter yet, and Ohio State transfer Devin Brown was the one projected to lead the Bears. Brown landed in Tier 6, while the outlet wondered “whether Brown can hold off true freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.”
That question didn’t last long. Sagapolutele won the job before the first game and made the most of it, while Brown attempted just seven passes all season.
Now the Cal sophomore has moved all the way up to Tier 2 on The Athletic’s 2026 list, coming in 14th nationally among 138 quarterbacks ranked by a panel of three dozen college coaches, general managers, personnel directors, scouts and front-office staffers from across the country.
That puts Sagapolutele second among ACC quarterbacks, behind only Miami’s Darian Mensah, the Duke transfer who checks in at No. 4 and as a Tier 1 quarterback. He’s one spot ahead of SMU’s Kevin Jennings, and those are the only three ACC passers to land in the top two tiers. Sagapolutele is also the highest-rated sophomore in the rankings.
The Athletic’s evaluation was glowing. The outlet wrote that Sagapolutele “burst onto the scene last season and was the best true freshman quarterback in the country.”
It added that he delivers several “wow” throws each game, shows strong anticipation and is extremely accurate. The piece also said he has turned Cal into “appointment television for college football diehards or anyone who appreciates good QB play,” and noted that the Bears should have better weapons after a busy winter in the transfer portal.
One ACC personnel staffer went even further.
“He might be the best one (in the league),” the staffer said. “His ball placement is terrific, but it’s his poise.
It’s his understanding of where to go when the initial read ain’t open. He was on his ass so much, yet he always got rid of the ball because he knew where to go with it.
It was remarkable to me. He’s limited mobility-wise, but it doesn’t matter.
Unless you’re asking him to run, he can play in any offense and excel.”
The rest of the ACC quarterback list shows how high Sagapolutele has climbed within the league. Behind him and Jennings in Tier 2 are NC State’s CJ Bailey and Pitt’s Mason Heintschel in Tier 3.
Tier 4 includes Syracuse’s Steve Angeli, Virginia Tech’s Ethan Grunkemeuer, Virginia’s Beau Pribula, Wake Forest’s Gio Lopez, Clemson’s Christopher Vizzina, Louisville’s Lincoln Keinholz and Duke’s Walter Eget. Tier 5 has Florida State’s Ashton Daniels and Georgia Tech’s Alberto Mendoza, while Tier 7 includes Boston College’s Mason McKenzie and Stanford’s Davis Warren.
At the top of the national rankings are Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss, Dante Moore of Oregon and Notre Dame’s CJ Carr, followed by Mensah and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin. Oklahoma State’s Drew Mestermaker, Texas’ Arch Manning and LSU’s Sam Leavitt round out the top eight.

Californias staff is adding a familiar face for the next step of its rebuild, with Matt Bradley set to move into a bigger role as director of player development for the 2026-27 season. Mark Madsen announced the hire as the Bears continue to build on a successful 2025-26 campaign, and Bradley arrives with the kind of background that fits a program trying to keep momentum going.
Bradley knows Haas Pavilion as well as anyone, having spent three seasons at Cal before moving on after a decorated run that included All-Pac-12 recognition and a long list of made shots and points. Since his playing days, he has worked as a teacher, mentor and sports trainer, spent time overseas in Germany and then returned to the program as a graduate assistant, giving Cal another staff member who understands both the jersey and the job.
